NEW ORLEANS - With four players scoring in double figures, Temple men's basketball won its sixth straight game with a 64-56 road win at Tulane on Wednesday night. The Owls, now 12-4 overall, remain undefeated in the American Athletic Conference at 3-0.
Temple was able to rebound from a couple of Green Wave runs down the stretch of the second half. The Owls saw a 10-point lead evaporate with five minutes left, and Tulane later cut a seven-point lead to four with less than a minute to go. Senior guard Will Cummings was solid for Temple, hitting 8-of-9 at the line including 4-of-4 in the final 28 seconds.
Junior Quenton DeCosey led the Owls with 15 points, while Cummings and senior Jesse Morgan both finished with 14. Junior Jaylen Bond recorded his fourth double-double of the season for the Owls with a game-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points.
Three players finished in double figures for Tulane (11-4, 2-1) led by Jay Hook who hit 4-of-6 from long range and scored 14 points.
The Owls suffered one of their worst shooting halves of the season in the first period, but Tulane was unable to take much of an advantage. Temple made just three two-pointers in the half, but hit 5-of-11 from behind the arc to stay in the game.
After Temple missed its first seven shots, Obi Enechionyia scored a putback at 17:39 to get the Owls on the board. They went on to trail by as many as eight in the first four minutes before Morgan got going from long range.
Morgan's second trey of the game started a 7-0 run that gave Temple a 16-15 lead at 12:31, but the Owls then went cold down the stretch. Mark Williams put in a shot from behind the arc for a 19-18 lead at 8:18, but then neither team scored for nearly a three-minute stretch. For the Owls, the bucket by Williams would be their only one in nearly 10 minutes.
Tulane took a six-point, 25-19 lead near the three-minute mark before Temple was able to close on a 6-2 run. Morgan's third trey of the half pulled the Owls within two, 27-25, and that score stood at the break.
Bond scored two putbacks early in the second half, the second of which started a 7-0 run that gave the Owls a lead they would never relinquish. Temple held Tulane scoreless for more than three minutes towards the midway point of the half, using a 9-1 run for its largest lead of 10, 35-25 at 11:43.
Just past the midway point, the Green Wave began a comeback that would see them tie the game at 51-51 near the five-minute mark. The Owls responded well to the pressure, and Morgan's fourth three-pointer of the game capped a 7-0 run that gave Temple a solid cushion in the final minutes. Tulane cut the lead to four in the final minute, but Cummings hit 4-of-4 at the line to seal the victory for the Owls.
Temple will return home for its next contest, a 3:00 p.m. game vs. Tulsa on Saturday, Jan. 10 (ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT).
