Field Hockey Heads to Villanova for Regular Season Finale on Saturday
10.30.15 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The final game of the regular season will take Temple field hockey to nearby Villanova, where the Owls will look to clinch a berth in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. Temple brings a three-game win streak into Saturday's game, which is set for noon at the Villanova Stadium.
While the Owls (6-12, 2-2) have had their struggles this season with six one-goal losses during an eight-game losing streak, a big win at #12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20 broke that streak in impressive fashion. Since that win, the Owls have also earned a 3-1 BIG EAST home win against Georgetown and a 4-1 non-conference victory at Lafayette.
Two-time defending NCAA champion UConn has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, set for Nov. 6-8 at Old Dominion, but the other three spots remain open. Temple could finish as high as second with a win at Villanova on Saturday, but is also not yet assured of a berth with a loss.Â
Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season after the Owls' 3-0 week. Her impressive performances included making 10 saves in the upset win at ODU. Senior forward Alyssa Delp was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after scoring one goal against Georgetown and two more at Lafayette. Delp leads Temple with 12 goals this season, which ranks second among all players in the BIG EAST. Mitchell ranks second in the BIG EAST in saves (105) and saves per game (5.83).
With 42 goals scored (2.33 goals per game), Temple ranks second among the teams in the BIG EAST Conference. The Owls also rank second in the BIG EAST in goals scored off corners with 12 (0.67 per game).
Villanova (5-10, 2-2) also upset 12th-ranked Old Dominion last week, winning 2-1 at home on Oct. 23. The Wildcats' other BIG EAST results include a 3-1 win vs. Providence, a 10-0 loss to UConn and a 2-1 overtime loss to Georgetown. Temple leads Villanova 10-3 in the all-time series, and has won in each of the last two seasons despite both games also being on the road. The Owls got a 6-3 victory last season, and a 4-1 win in 2013.
