Field Hockey Tops Villanova in OT to Earn BIG EAST Tournament Berth

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Temple field hockey season was extended in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Villanova, as the Owls won 3-2 in overtime to advance to next week's BIG EAST Tournament. Sophomore Maiyah Brown scored the game-winner on an assist from senior Alyssa Delp, and Temple will be the second seed next weekend in Norfolk, Va.
The game was a must-win for the Owls, who would have been eliminated from contention with a loss, but instead are the second-seeded of four teams. Old Dominion will serve as the host of the BIG EAST Tournament, which will see Temple play third-seeded Villanova again on Friday, Nov. 6. Top seed UConn will play host ODU in the other semifinal.Â
"To win today is really us coming full circle," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "From where we started and then we had a little bit of a slump there in the middle of the season. To know that we had to win this game for our season to continue, and for them to play the way they did collectively as a unit, it speaks volumes."
Both teams came from behind in the game, with Temple scoring first but later falling behind 2-1 with just 10 minutes left in the second half.
Temple senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell who finished with six saves in the game, made two in the first 15 minutes to keep Villanova off the scoreboard. The Owls struck first in the 24th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead that would stand for more than 36 minutes of action.
On their third corner opportunity, the Owls' Delp took a pass from junior Paige Gross and got it past Villanova keeper Erika Miller for the goal.
At the end of the first half, Villanova held a 6-3 lead in total shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Owls also had to fight off 10 Wildcat penalty corners to keep Villanova from scoring. Mitchell went on to finish the first period with five saves.
In the 45th minute, Villanova got a clean shot off on a penalty corner that went into goal but was too high to count. The Owls came right back down the other way to earn a corner of their own, but did not get a shot off.
The Wildcats continued to earn corners that the Owls continued to fend off, but Villanova's 16th corner of the game resulted in a goal. Courtney Devine was open on the near post to put it past Mitchell with just 10:05 remaining in the game.
Less than four minutes later, Devine was open in close to the same spot and took a pass from Kristen Mericle to put the Wildcats up 2-1.
The Owls' sense of urgency paid off quickly, as they came back down aggressively. Brown took a long shot on goal that was saved by Miller, but it rebounded off her and sophomore Hattie Kuhns was in perfect position to collect the ball and score to tie the game at 2-2.
Mitchell's final save of the game came with less than three minutes to go in regulation, and the teams went into overtime knotted at 2-2. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Keer took one of only two shots that would be taken in overtime in the fifth minute, but it went high. One minute later, Brown got the pass from Delp and put it into the back of the cage to give Temple the win.
