Field Hockey Faces #2 UConn for BIG EAST Championship on Sunday

11.7.15 | Field Hockey

NORFOLK, Va. - The BIG EAST Championship is on the line for Temple field hockey as the Owls get set to play #2 UConn for the league title at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8. Temple advanced to the title game by way of a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win against Villanova in Friday's semifinals.

The championship game can be seen live via the BIG EAST Digital Network through the Fox Sports Go app or website.

Temple tied Friday's game on a goal by senior Alyssa Delp with 1:39 remaining in regulation, and then senior Tricia Light scored the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period. The Owls have now won five in a row, a streak that began on Oct. 20 with a 1-0 upset at #12 Old Dominion.

The Owls' last two wins both came in overtime against Villanova. On Oct. 31, Temple also had to come from behind in regulation. The game was a must-win for them just to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament, but the win then earned them the second seed. Sophomore Maiyah Brown scored the overtime game-winner that day, and assisted on the equalizer against Villanova in the BIG EAST semifinal win.

Temple has earned a conference tournament berth for 13 straight years, with the first 10 of those being in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Last season, the third-seeded Owls beat second-seeded ODU 2-1 in the BIG EAST Semifinals before falling 4-1 to top-seeded UConn in the championship game. Sunday's game will be a rematch of last year's title game between Temple and UConn. The teams played on Oct. 9 in Philadelphia during a losing streak for the Owls, and UConn shut Temple out 8-0.

Delp leads Temple with 14 goals which ranks third among all players in the BIG EAST. With 31 career goals, Delp needs just two more to move into a tie for 10th all-time at Temple.

UConn holds an 8-2-1 lead in the all-time series dating back to 1986. The two teams have played twice in each season since Temple joined the BIG EAST in 2013, with all five matches so far going to the Huskies. In last year's regular season meeting at Temple, the #16 Owls nearly upset #4 UConn but lost on a late goal by a score of 4-3. The teams met again in the 2014 BIG EAST Championship game, with the Huskies winning 4-1 before going on to take their second-straight NCAA title.

Sophomore forward Charlotte Veitner was named the 2015 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, while senior midfielder Roisin Upton earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors. Veitner's 36 goals and 91 total points lead both the conference and the nation. As a team, the Huskies rank first in NCAA Division I in nearly every category including goals per game, points per game and save percentage.
