Men's Basketball Travels to Wisconsin for CBS National Telecast Saturday

12.3.15 | Men's Basketball

MADISON, Wis. - While the #22 Temple Football team will be playing in the Conference Championship game Saturday (noon) on ABC, the Owls' men's basketball team will be taking on 2015 NCAA Finalist Wisconsin at the Kohl Center on CBS at 12:30 p.m.  It marks the first time in school history that two Temple teams have played simultaneously on network television.

The men's basketball game may not be for a championship, but there is a lot at stake for the teams in this critical non-conference showdown.  The Owls (3-3) will be looking to claim a road win over a perennial national power after failing in their three opportunities against nationally-ranked teams so far.

The Badgers (5-3) look to have rebounded from a 69-67 upset loss to Western Illinois to open the season.  The Final Four participant the last two seasons posted a 66-58 overtime win at #14/19 Syracuse Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Temple, which evened its record Wednesday with a 79-70 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson, is led by senior guard Quenton DeCosey (15.5 ppg).  The only Owl to score in double figures in all six games, DeCosey is one of four Temple starters averaging over 10 points per game in head coach Fran Dunphy's balanced attack.

Senior forward Jaylen Bond averages 11.2 points while topping the team with a 7.0 rebound average.  Sophomore forward Obi Enechionyia (11.0 ppg) and senior guard Devin Coleman (10.8 ppg) round out the quartet while junior guard Josh Brown (6.3 ppg, 4.5 apg) directs the Temple offense.

Dunphy utilizes a deep bench with eight Owls averaging double-figure minutes with a ninth (Mark Williams) at 9.3 mpg. Freshman guards Trey Lowe (7.0 ppg) and Levan Shawn Alston, Jr. (6.3 ppg) are the top offensive reserves.

Wisconsin, under the direction of Chester, Pa. native Bo Ryan, also has four double-figure scorers.   Junior guard Bronson Koenig, who has made a team-high 20 three-pointers, leads the Badgers with a 15.6 scoring average.  Junior forward Nigel Hayes is right behind at 14.9 ppg. while redshirt freshman Ethan Happ (11.0 ppg) tops the team in rebounding (8.5 rpg). Junior Vitto Brown (10.6 ppg) and redshirt Zak Showalter (8.3 ppg) round out the starting five.

This is the 10th meeting between the programs with Wisconsin owning a 6-3 edge in the series.  Wisconsin won the last meeting, 80-67, at the Liacouras Center on Jan. 2, 2003 while Temple won the last game in Madison, 70-67, on Dec. 3, 2001.

Ryan and Dunphy have coached against each other twice.  Those games, both Wisconsin wins, came when Dunphy was at the helm of the Penn Quakers in 2003 and 2004.
