Field Hockey Defeated by #12 Northwestern, 4-0
9.20.15 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey had its chances with only two fewer total shots on Sunday afternoon, but the 12th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats capitalized on their opportunities and shut out the Owls by a score of 4-0. The Wildcats (7-3) scored a pair of goals in each half and made four saves to keep Temple scoreless.
"We're definitely playing a difficult, competitive schedule," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "It's not our lack of trying at all. Our fight, our work rate is high, which we knew it was going to be. We just need to be a little bit smarter when we have the ball...We need to keep the focus on ourselves and take more responsibility to execute the game plan and be as efficient as possible."
The Owls (3-5) got eight saves from senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell, tying her career high. Offensively, senior Alyssa Delp had the most chances with four shots including two on goal.
In the first half, Temple finished with eight shots to Northwestern's six, but five of the Wildcats' chances were on goal. Isabel Flens got her team on the board in the eighth minute with a strong shot from the top of the circle, passed from the right side by Pascale Massey.
In the 20th minute, Northwestern broke through the Owls' defense and Ashley Bernardi scored on a diving shot from the far post, assisted by Flens.
The Wildcats came out of halftime and quickly made it 3-0, as Caroline Troncelliti scored from the far right side just 17 seconds into the action. Flens got another assist late in the game, as Maggie Fitzgerald tipped in her shot with less than three minutes remaining for the final tally.
The Owls will play both of their games on the road next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. contest at #19 James Madison on Friday, Sept. 25. It will mark Temple's fifth game against a Top 20 opponent this season.
"We've done some things well in some games in every facet of our play," said Freeman, "and we just need to put together a complete game...We're right up there with the top teams in the country, and we just need to figure out how to control momentum and focus on us and our game."
