Field Hockey Travels to #19 James Madison and American This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey will spend its weekend on the road playing two non-conference opponents before starting its BIG EAST schedule next week. The Owls (3-5) will play at #19 James Madison (5-2) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, and then head to Washington, D.C. to face American University (5-3) at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Temple is coming off a 1-1 week in which the Owls earned a 4-2 road win at Monmouth before suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of #12 Northwestern two days later. Four of Temple's five losses have come against teams ranked in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, and the Owls will face another four ranked teams in their next five games. Next weekend has Temple opening BIG EAST play on the road at #15 Old Dominion before facing #13 Liberty at home. The following week, the Owls will host #1 UConn on Friday, Oct. 9.
Senior Alyssa Delp recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Owls to their win at Monmouth, scoring three goals including the game-winner to break a 2-2 tie. For her efforts, Delp was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She currently leads the team with seven goals, which also ranks third among all players in the conference. Close behind Delp is senior Sarah Deck with six goals, ranking second on the team and fourth in the league. Seniors Tricia Light and Rachel Steinman are integral parts of the Owls' penalty corners, and lead the team with three assists apiece. Senior goalkeeper Haley Mitchell tied her career high with eight saves in the loss to Northwestern, and has made 41 total saves for the season.
Scouting JMU
James Madison is 5-2 overall, recently having its five-game win streak snapped by #9 Louisville in a 5-0, neutral-site loss. The #19 Dukes also had an early-season loss to Liberty, now ranked #13 in the poll. JMU's wins include a 4-1 victory over #17 Iowa, an 8-2 win vs. Longwood and a 7-2 win over VCU. Eleven different players have scored for JMU, led by senior Loes Stijntjes with seven goals and three assists for 17 total points.Â
The Dukes have have won all five games in the series history against Temple, but the most recent contest was 15 years ago. The Dukes were ranked #12 at the time, and won 5-1 in Philadelphia.
Scouting American
American has gone 5-3 to start the season, and will host Holy Cross on Friday before facing Temple on Sunday. The Eagles went 4-1 early but have since lost two of their last three, including a 6-1 defeat at the hands of #8 Maryland. One of American's early wins was a 3-2 defeat of then-16th ranked Old Dominion. Freshman forward Rafaela Rubas leads the Eagles with five goals and two assists for 12 total points, followed closely by junior forward Natalie Konerth with three goals and five assists for 11 points.Â
Temple holds a 12-4 lead in the all-time series against American, and won 3-2 in Philadelphia a year ago. The Eagles won the last game in Washington, D.C., also by a score of 3-2 on Oct. 2, 2011.
