Men's Basketball Goes for Fourth Straight Win at East Carolina on Wednesday

1.26.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Coming off an 89-80 upset of #8 SMU, the Temple men's basketball team will be looking for its fourth straight win on Wednesday night, Jan. 27 at East Carolina. The Owls (11-7, 5-2) beat the Pirates (9-11, 1-6) at home earlier this season. Wednesday's game is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3/1210 AM WPHT.

Headlines
• Temple is back to its giant-killing ways, coming off an 89-80 upset win against #8 and previously undefeated SMU on Jan. 24. The Owls have now taken down a Top 10 team in seven of the last eight seasons.
• Overall, the Owls have won five of their last six including a double-overtime win against Cincinnati on Jan. 16.
• Senior guard Devin Coleman went a perfect 8-of-8 from the field against SMU, including 7-of-7 from long range. He scored a career and game-high 23 points, and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
• In the double overtime win over Cincinnati, senior guard Quenton DeCosey scored a game-high 22 points while Coleman came off the bench for 15 points.
• Temple has faced six ranked teams already this season, with its three wins being the most since 2005-06. The Owls now have at least one win over a ranked opponent for nine straight seasons.
• Temple's only loss since Jan. 2 was a narrow, 67-65 defeat at Memphis in the final seconds. The Owls tied the game on a Josh Brown layup with two seconds left, but a foul on the next possession sent the Tigers to the free throw line.
• This season marks the first since 1998 that the Owls have beaten two Top 25 opponents on the road (#22/23 Cincinnati on Dec. 29, #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5).
• DeCosey is Temple's leading scorer this season with 15.8 points per game, ranking third in the American Athletic Conference, and has scored in double figures in 16 of 18 contests. He has scored 1,271 points to rank 33rd all-time in program history. When DeCosey scores at least 20 points, the Owls are 5-1 so far this season.
• The Owls' 55-53 win at #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5 was the 200th win for head coach Fran Dunphy in his 10 seasons at Temple. He is now one of just five Division I coaches with 200 or more wins at two different schools, while also taking each school to six or more NCAA Tournaments.
• With 514 wins, Dunphy is just three wins away from surpassing former Owl coach John Chaney and becoming the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history.
• As a team, the Owls are ranked third in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 9.4. They have recorded single digit turnovers in 10 of 18 games, tallying as few as five (vs. Delaware on 11/29).
• East Carolina, at 9-11 overall, had lost six straight games before edging Memphis on the road this past weekend, 84-83. Senior guard Prince Williams made two free throws with 4.1 seconds left to play, while sophomore guard B.J. Tyson drained a career-high six 3-pointers and matched his career best of 26 points.
• Tyson leads ECU with 15.1 points per game, followed closely by junior guard Caleb White with 14.1 ppg.

Temple vs. East Carolina
• Temple and East Carolina are meeting for the fourth time after beginning the all-time series last season.
• The Owls have not lost to ECU, sweeping the series last year and winning 78-60 at home already this season on Jan. 9.
• In 2014-15, Temple earned a 66-53 victory at home on Feb. 14, and followed it up with a 70-56 win on the road on March 5.
• ECU head coach Jeff Lebo is 2-3 all-time against Temple, with the two wins coming in 2004-05 and 2005-06 while he was head coach at Auburn.

Giant Killers
Temple's 89-80 upset of #8 SMU on Jan. 24 was the program's seventh win over a Top-10 team in the last eight seasons. The Owls achieved the feat for five straight years from 2018-09 to 2012-13, and began a new streak in 2014-15 with a 77-52 defeat of #10/10 Kansas on Dec. 22.

On Dec. 13, 2008, Dionte Christmas scored 35 points to lead the Owls to an 88-72 win over #8/8 Tennessee.  On Dec. 13, 2009, Juan Fernandez delivered a career-high 33 points in a 75-65 win over #3/3 Villanova. On Dec. 9, 2010, Ramone Moore exploded for a career-high 30 points in a 68-65 win over #9/10 Georgetown. On Jan. 4, 2012, it was Khalif Wyatt scoring 22 points to propel the Owls to a 78-73 win over #3/5 Duke. Wyatt did it again with a career-high 33 points in an 83-79 win over #3/3 Syracuse on Dec. 12, 2012.

After a season without a Top 10 win, the Owls made 18 of their final 23 shots from the field for a dominant win against #10/10 Kansas at the Wells Fargo Center in 2014-15. Senior Devin Coleman sparked the most recent upset against #8 SMU, hitting 8-of-8 from the field including 7-of-7 from long range to finish with a career and game-high 23 points.

In addition to beating a Top 10 team in seven of eight seasons, the Owls have beaten at least one Top 25 team for nine straight seasons. Their three victories over ranked opponents this year are the most since 2005-06.

Sixth Man
Senior guard Devin Coleman has given the Owls new life in coming off the bench over the last six games. Coleman started in the first 12 games of the season, a 6-6 stretch for Temple, averaging 8.6 ppg and shooting 31.5 percent from long range (17-of-54).

Since coming off the bench for six games starting with the Owls' win at UConn on Jan. 5, Coleman is the team's second-leading scorer with 13.0 ppg, and has hit 20-of-39 three-pointers (51.3 percent). Temple's record in that span is 5-1.

Coleman Comparison
In games started (12)
8.6 ppg, 30.9 percent from the field, 31.5 percent from long range (17-of-54), team record 6-6.
In games off the bench (6)
13.0 ppg, 49.2 percent from the field, 51.3 percent from long range (20-of-39), team record 5-1.

Perfect Game
Perfection is a rarity in basketball or in any sport, but senior guard Devin Coleman couldn't miss for the Owls this past weekend. Hitting 8-of-8 from the field including 7-of-7 from beyond the arc, Coleman scored a career and game-high 23 points in leading Temple to an 89-80 upset of #8 SMU on Jan. 24.

Coleman's performance from long range tied the school record for three-point percentage in a game, matching Pepe Sanchez's 100% (7-7) game against Rhode Island on February 16, 1997.

In the Owls' four biggest conference games so far (SMU, UConn and two against Cincinnati), Coleman is a combined 18-of-28 (.643) from three-point range.
