10.13.16 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The BIG EAST slate continues close to home for Temple field hockey on Saturday, Oct. 15, as the Owls head up I-76 to Conshohocken to face Villanova at the Wildcats' brand-new facility. Game time is set for noon at the Proving Grounds, where the new Villanova Field Hockey Field is located.

The Owls, who are 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST, recently won four straight before having that streak snapped in their most recent game at Penn on Oct. 9. Last Friday, Oct. 7, Temple upset No. 13 Old Dominion by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field. Freshman Maddie Lilliock made nine saves, and junior Rachael Mueller scored the OT game-winner. Both players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts.

Mueller is the Owls' leading scorer with eight goals this season, and three of those have been game-winning goals including two in overtime (at Sacred Heart, vs. No. 13 ODU). The Owls' first two wins in the streak included their their first shutout, a 2-0 victory against Holy Cross on Oct. 2. It was also the first career shutout for Lilliock, who currently ranks eighth in NCAA Division I with 7.57 saves per game. Freshman Becky Gerhart has notched six defensive saves to tie for third among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros has three defensive saves and is tied for 11th. The Owls' 11 total defensive saves rank third in the nation.

Four of Temple's losses have come to teams now ranked in the top 10 as of the Oct. 11 NFHCA Coaches Poll (No. 1 UConn, No. 2 Syracuse,  No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Delaware).

The Wildcats are 3-11 overall and 0-4 in BIG EAST play so far. After going 0-7 to start the season, Villanova has won three of its last seven games, all against non-conference foes. Last weekend, the Wildcats lost 6-0 at No. 1 UConn and then fell 4-1 at Fairfield.

On Sept. 16, Villanova played its first game on its brand-new field, where the Wildcats now have a record of 3-2. Last season, the Wildcats went 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the BIG EAST. The team returned Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Francesca Bello, who led the team in goals last season and is doing so again with eight goals so far in 2016.

Temple leads Villanova 12-3 in the all-time series and has won all four games against the Wildcats since joining the BIG EAST as an associate member in 2013. Last season's meetings were both intense rivalries, with the Owls winning 3-2 in overtime at Villanova in the final game of the regular season, and winning 2-1 in overtime a week later in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
