Field Hockey Hosts New BIG EAST Foe Quinnipiac on Friday

PHILADELPHIA - Needing a strong final push to end the season and earn a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, Temple field hockey will look to start with a win against Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. The Owls (5-10, 2-3) are playing the Bobcats (4-11, 3-2) for the first time in program history, and both teams are in contention to earn a spot in the four-team conference tournament that Temple will host Nov. 4 and 6.
Temple is currently tied for fifth in the BIG EAST standings with Old Dominion, a team the Owls beat on Oct. 7. Four of the eight teams in the league will earn berths in the tournament, and only UConn at 5-0 has clinched one of those spots so far. Providence stands alone in second place at 4-1, with Liberty and Quinnipiac tied for third at 3-2. After facing Quinnipiac on Friday, Temple will play its final conference game at Liberty, also new to the league this year, on Oct. 28.

Scouting Quinnipiac
The Bobcats have gone just 4-11 overall, but have earned three of those wins in BIG EAST play to tie for third in the conference standings. Quinnipiac lost 2-1 in overtime to Holy Cross on Oct. 18, but had previously won back-to-back games including a 3-2 overtime win at home against No. 19 Old Dominion on Oct. 14.
Graduate student and forward Savanna Reilly leads Quinnipiac with eight goals and 20 total points, and is tied for the team lead with four assists along with freshman forward Ines Ruiz Martinez.
Quinnipiac is in its first season in the BIG EAST, coming from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference where the Bobcats shared the MAAC regular season title last year before finishing as runner-up in the conference tournament. Temple and Quinnipiac are meeting for the first time in program history on Friday.
Mueller Shines in Clutch Time
Junior Rachael Mueller leads Temple with nine goals so far in 2016, and has scored three of the Owls' five game-winning goals (senior Katie Foran has the other two). All three of Mueller's game-winners came in Temple's recent streak of four wins in a row, with two of those goals coming in overtime. Mueller scored the OT game-winner in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25, and also scored the OT winner in a 2-1 upset of No. 13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7.
Temple to Host BIG EAST Tournament
Temple's first season on Howarth Field is coming with a big responsibility, as the Owls will serve as hosts for the 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The semifinals are set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, with the championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. All games will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) through FoxSportsGo.com and the FoxSportsGo app.
The Owls last hosted a conference tournament in 2010 when they were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Temple has advanced to its conference tournament in each of the last 13 years including all three BIG EAST Tournaments since joining the league as an associate member in 2013. The Owls have earned a spot in the championship game two years in a row, falling to UConn in both.
