Field Hockey Drops Road Game at Liberty; Will be BIG EAST Tournament's Fourth Seed

10.28.16 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA -  It was not an ideal end to the BIG EAST regular season for Temple field hockey as the Owls were shut out 7-0 at Liberty on Friday afternoon, but Temple has earned a berth in its own BIG EAST Tournament next week. The Owls (6-11, 3-4), will be the No. 4 seed and will face top-seeded UConn in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4 at Howarth Field (time TBA).

"We knew playing against a strong Liberty opponent was going to be a challenge for us," said head coach Marybeth Freeman. "We clearly didn't put our best foot forward in regards to playing team hockey, but the team is very much aware of the adjustments we need to make moving forward to prepare for our Lafayette game on Sunday. We did get a strong performance today from senior Michelle Walsh, and I was pleased with our ability to get shots off. We just need to have more vision prior to taking those shots."

Temple either needed a win at Liberty or a Providence win at Old Dominion, and the Friars earned that win 1-0 in overtime at ODU. Temple, ODU and Quinnipiac all finished in a tie for fourth place at 3-4, but the Owls defeated both of those teams to break the tie and earn the spot.

Liberty freshman Agueda Moroni scored three goals to lead the Flames (7-8, 5-2), who also got a pair of goals from Serena Barr.

Temple put nine shots on goal for the afternoon, but eight were saved by Liberty's Allison Schaefer with the ninth stopped by Monica Hernick late in the game. Penalty corners were strongly in favor of the Flames, who earned 11 of them to Temple's four and scored on four of those.

Agueda scored the first three of Liberty's goals to complete the hat trick, with two of those coming in the first nine minutes.

The Owls got off six total shots in the opening period, with four on goal, but all four were stopped by Schaefer. With seven minutes left in the half, the Flames got a fourth goal from Pippa Best, and added a fifth from Bethany Barr with just over a minute remaining until halftime.

The second half was uneventful early on, but Serena Barr later scored twice in a five-minute span for the final tally of 7-0.

Before the BIG EAST Tournament arrives, Temple will celebrate Senior Day as the Owls play their final regular season game at home on Sunday, Oct. 30 against Lafayette at 2 p.m.
