10.5.16 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Looking for win number four in a row, Temple field hockey will host BIG EAST rival No. 13 Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. The game time has CHANGED from its original start time of 3 p.m. due to weather concerns for ODU on the Monarchs' return home.

The Owls (4-8, 1-2) are coming off a pair of wins at Howarth Field last weekend over Georgetown and Holy Cross, while the Monarchs (6-5, 2-1) have lost back-to-back games against No. 12 Virginia and No. 7 Maryland. On Sunday, Oct. 9, Temple will head across town to face city rival Penn at 1 p.m.

Last year's game at ODU was a turning point for the Owls, who upset the nationally ranked Monarchs 1-0 to snap an eight-game losing streak. That victory propelled Temple to five in a row before the Owls' season eventually ended with a loss to No. 2 UConn in the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament.

Temple Wins Three Straight
After starting the season at 1-8 overall, the Owls have bounced back to win three straight in the last two weeks and improve their record to 4-8. An overtime win at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25 got the momentum going, and Temple followed that up with its first BIG EAST win on Sept. 30 by a score of 4-1 against Georgetown. Freshman Maddie Merton scored twice in that victory, while Mueller tapped in the game-winning second goal.

Two days later the Owls won again, recording their first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win against visiting Holy Cross. Senior Katie Foran notched both a goal and an assist, while Lilliock made three saves for her first career shutout. Lilliock posted five saves in the Georgetown win, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts.

Scouting Old Dominion
The 13th-ranked Monarchs are 6-5 overall and have started 2-1 in BIG EAST play, losing only narrowly by a score of 2-1 against UConn. The Monarchs won in overtime against Liberty, 2-1, and shut out Georgetown 5-0. ODU is coming off a close, 2-1 loss at No. 7 Maryland on Oct. 4.

Junior Danielle Grega leads the Monarchs with six goals and 13 total points, while three others have scored four goals apiece. Redshirt freshman Kealsie Robles has played every minute in goal for ODU, making 49 saves while allowing 20 goals for a save percentage of .710. While Grega was the team's leading scorer last year, the Monarchs also returned Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Megan Byas and 2015 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Chrissy Horn.

Old Dominion holds a 20-3-1 lead in the all-times series against Temple, but the Owls have won two straight. They took out the Monarchs 2-1 in the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament semifinals, and upset the 20th-ranked Monarchs 1-0 on the road during the regular season in 2015.

Coach Freeman's ODU Career
Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman is a 2003 graduate of Old Dominion, where she was a four-year starter in goal for the Monarchs. She helped lead them to national titles in 1998 and 2000, while ODU also won the Colonial Athletic Association title all four years of her career.

Tough Lineup for Temple in 2016
As of the NFHCA Top 20 Coaches Poll for Oct. 4, five of Temple's opponents are nationally ranked. The Owls have already faced No. 2 Syracuse (now No. 4), No. 18 Penn State (now No. 5), No. 10 Delaware (now No. 9) and No. 3 UConn (now No. 1). Still upcoming is No. 13 ODU (Oct. 7).
