Field Hockey Goes For Win Number Five in a Row at Penn on Sunday
10.8.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Coming off a thrilling, 2-1 overtime win against No. 13 Old Dominion, Temple field hockey will go for its fifth straight win when the Owls travel across town to Penn on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. The contest against the Quakers (7-3) is one of two vs. non-conference opponents the Owls have left among five regular season games.
Temple is 5-8 overall after its four wins in a row which include a pair of overtime victories. Four of the Owls' losses were to teams now ranked in the Top 10, with the ODU upset being their first win over a ranked opponent this season. Junior Rachael Mueller scored the overtime game-winner, marking her third game-winning goal in the past four games and second in the extra period. Mueller leads Temple with eight goals this year, while senior Katie Foran and freshman Maddie Merton have scored four goals apiece to tie for second. Redshirt junior Sarah Keer scored the Owls' first goal against No. 13 ODU early in the contest off an assist from junior Maiyah Brown. Keer is the Owls' leader in assists this season with four.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock, among the nation's top 10 in saves per game, made nine of them on Friday to record the win. She had help from fellow freshmen Kathryn Edgar and Becky Gerhart who each notched one defensive save.
Penn comes into Sunday's game at 7-3 after a double-overtime, 1-0 win at Dartmouth on Friday. The Quakers are coming off a strong season in 2015, when they finished 13-3, and they returned eight starters from that squad. After starting the 2016 season at 5-1, Penn has dropped two of its last four games including a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Harvard on Oct. 2.
Junior Alexa Hoover leads the Quakers with five goals this season after ranking second in the NCAA in both goals per game (1.69) and points per game (3.94) last season.
The Owls lead the all-time series 33-15-2 over Penn, but lost last year's meeting 2-1 at home.
Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman spent five seasons at Columbia before coming to Temple in 2015, facing Colleen Fink's Penn team each year as fellow members of the Ivy League. The rivalry was a heated one, with Freeman's team earning 4-3 overtime wins in both 2014 and 2013, and a 3-2 overtime win in 2012. Columbia's only loss to Penn in Freeman's tenure was a 3-2 overtime defeat in 2010.
