Field Hockey's Win Streak Snapped at City Rival Penn
10.9.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey had its four-game win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon as the Owls (5-9) fell 3-0 at city rival Penn (8-3). The Quakers got a pair of goals from Alexa Hoover, both in the final 21 minutes.
The advantage for Penn was primarily on penalty corners, as the Quakers earned 13 of them to Temple's four. Both of Hoover's goals were scored on direct corners in the second half. The Owls had seven total shots in the game, with three on goal, but all three were saved by Penn's Liz Mata.
"Today's game was a disappointing display, knowing how our team can play," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "It's a missed opportunity but I know it will be a learning experience for sure. We're looking forward to bouncing back next weekend against Villanova."
The only goal of the first half was an early one, as Penn's Elise Tilton scored on a high-hit ball in the seventh minute for a 1-0 lead.
The Quakers earned three first-half penalty corners while the Owls earned two, but none resulted in a goal for either team. Much of the play in the opening period saw the teams battling for possession in the midfield, with neither goalkeeper overly taxed.
Temple freshman Maddie Lilliock made a pair of saves to hold Penn to its single goal in the first half, while Mata made one save to keep the Owls off the scoreboard.
With just over 21 minutes remaining in the game, Penn earned its fourth of four corners in a row, and Hoover scored on assists from Rachel Huang and Paige Meily. That trio connected a second time with two and half minutes left for the final tally of 3-0.
Next up for Temple is a road game at BIG EAST and city rival Villanova, set for noon on Saturday, Oct. 15.
