Field Hockey Set to Host No. 4 UConn in BIG EAST Semifinals on Friday

PHILADELPHIA - Making its 14th straight appearance in a conference tournament, fourth-seeded Temple field hockey will host top-seeded and No. 4 UConn in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. The Temple Sports Complex and Howarth Field are the site for all three games of the tournament, with the second semifinal set for 4 p.m. on Friday and the championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) will televise all three games through FoxSportsGo.com and the Fox Sports Go app. Temple's Kevin Copp will be on the play-by-play with analyst Faye Curran and sideline reporter Jay Alter.
Ticket prices per day are $7 for adults (age 13 and over) and $5 for those 12 and under. All session tickets are also available at $12 while groups of 10 or more can buy advanced single-game tickets at $5 each. BIG EAST students can also receive complimentary game tickets by showing a valid school I.D. at the box office. Merton was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts.
» Freshman Becky Gerhart has notched eight defensive saves to rank third among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros has three and is tied for 24th. The Owls' 16 total defensive saves rank second in the nation.
» On Friday, Oct. 7, Temple upset No. 13 Old Dominion by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field. Lilliock made nine saves, and Mueller scored the OT game-winner. Both players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts.

Scouting UConn
The Huskies, four-time defending BIG EAST champs, are ranked third in the nation and went undefeated at 7-0 in winning the BIG EAST regular season title while going 18-1 overall. UConn has defeated five teams ranked in the Top 20, including a 4-3 overtime win at No. 12 Boston College in its most recent game.
UConn won back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2013 and 2014 before advancing to the NCAA Semifinals in 2015. Junior Charlotte Veitner, the Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year and a first team All-American last season, leads the Huskies with 23 goals and 14 assists for 60 total points in 2016. UConn has also gotten 17 goals apiece from Amanda Collins and Casey Umstead. Head coach Nancy Stevens is in her 27th season with UConn and her 38th overall.
UConn leads Temple 10-2-1 in the all-time series, and has won the last nine straight meetings between the teams including a 6-0 win on its home field earlier this season on Sept. 23.
Temple's Tournament History
The Owls have now earned a conference tournament berth for 14 straight seasons, including all four in which they've been an associate member of the BIG EAST Conference.
From 2003 to 2012, Temple advanced to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament each year, making three appearances in the championship game. The Owls got only as far as the BIG EAST Semifinals in 2013, but advanced to the title game against top-seeded UConn in both 2014 and 2015. The last time Temple won a conference tournament was in 1994 in the A-10. It was one of two titles Temple has won after also being victorious in 1991.
Defensively Minded
With eight defensive saves so far in 2016, freshman Becky Gerhart ranks third among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros is tied for 23rd with three defensive saves. With 16 defensive saves as a team, the Owls rank second in the nation. Freshman Maddie Lilliock's 6.72 saves per game rank 13th in the nation, and the Owls' 7.78 saves per game rank 10th.
Owls Have International Flavor This Season
Two Temple freshmen, both consistent starters this year for the Owls, both hail from other countries. Maddie Merton is a native of Auckland, New Zealand, while Kathryn Edgar comes from Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Edgar picked up the sport early in life, having two older sisters that were field hockey standouts, while Merton came later to the sport after previously focusing on tennis and netball. Both have played key roles on the team in their debut seasons, and Merton is the team's second-leading scorer with six goals this year.
