Men's Basketball Hosts George Washington on Wednesday Looking for Sixth Straight Win
12.5.16 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball will go for its sixth straight win on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when the Owls (6-2) host George Washington (5-4) at 7:30 p.m. (CBSSN / 1210 AM WPHT). Fans who donate a new, unwrapped toy at the game to support Toys for Tots will receive $5 off tickets.
Temple football's American Athletic Conference Championship trophy will be on display in the concourse for fans to view and take pictures with.
The Owls are coming off their fifth straight win, 70-62 vs. Penn on Dec. 3, which was also Temple's 200th win all-time at the Liacouras Center. The win over the Quakers improved Temple to 3-0 in Philadelphia Big 5 play, with one game remaining at No. 1/1 Villanova on Dec. 13.
Four players scored in double figures in the win over Penn, led by Shizz Alston, Jr.'s 14 points. Alani Moore II and Obi Enechionyia scored 12 points apiece, while Ernest Aflakpui notched his second career double-double with 11 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds.
Enechionyia leads Temple and ranks second in the American Athletic Conference with 19.9 points per game, also leading the team and ranking eighth in the league with 7.9 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures in all eight contests including five games of 20 or more points. Senior point guard Josh Brown made his return to the court on Nov. 30 at Saint Joseph's after missing the first six games while rehabbing from an Achilles tendon tear suffered in May. Brown also came off the bench against Penn, making his first appearance at home in his final season.
Alston leads The American and ranks second in NCAA Division I with an assist/turnover ratio of 6.3 while also leading the league and ranking 27th in the nation with 2.4 steals per game. He has proven to be adept at getting the ball where he wants it, recording a team-best 38 assists to just six turnovers this season.
George Washington forward and graduate student Tyler Cavanaugh leads the team in scoring (17.0 ppg), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and assists (2.4 apg). The Colonials started the season 3-0, but have since lost four of their last six to stand at 5-4 overall. Last weekend, GW beat USF 68-67 before falling 67-48 to Florida State.Â
The Colonials went 28-10 last season on their way to winning the Postseason NIT, but were tasked with replacing 60 percent of the scoring from that squad. GW has a new but familiar face at the helm in interim head coach Maurice Joseph, who has been on the coaching staff for five seasons.
Temple and George Washington are meeting for the 70th time, with the Owls holding a 53-16 advantage in the series. The Owls and the Colonials were both members of the Atlantic 10 from 1982 until 2013. Wednesday's meeting marks just the second contest since the teams ceased to be conference opponents.
Temple has won seven straight against GW including a 90-77 win at home in the NIT Second Round on March 22, 2015. GW's last win in the series was on Feb. 17, 2007 on its home court, 84-72.
