Men's Basketball Begins Two-Game Road Trip at Houston on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to keep its spot atop the American Athletic Conference standings, Temple men's basketball heads out for a two-game road trip to Texas and Oklahoma. First up for the Owls is a 7 p.m. game at Houston on Sunday, Feb. 21 (ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT). They'll follow that up with another 7 p.m. game at Tulsa on Tuesday.

Headlines
• Temple had won five straight before a home loss to #1/1 Villanova in a Philadelphia Big 5 game on Feb. 17. The Owls narrowed a 23-point gap in the second half to 11 points in the 83-67 loss, but could come no closer.
• Freshman Trey Lowe had a breakout game against Villanova, coming off the bench for a career and team-high 21 points and hitting 5-of-8 shots from long range.
• Overall, the Owls have won eight of their last 10 contests. Their most recent win was 77-65 over USF on Feb. 14, with five players scoring in double figures for the first time this season.
• Senior Jaylen Bond and sophomore Obi Enechionyia led the way against USF with 18 points apiece, while Bond made it his seventh double-double of the season with 14 rebounds (tying his season high). With 8.1 rebounds per game, Bond leads the team and ranks eighth in the American Athletic Conference.
• The Owls are currently in sole possession of first place in The American with a record of 10-3.
• On Feb. 11, Temple came back from 12 points down with less than six minutes left for a 63-58 win vs. UConn.
• The Owls completed a regular season sweep of the Huskies thanks to 23 points from senior Quenton DeCosey, and the second-half heroics of junior Daniel Dingle who scored four 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 15 points.
• When Temple edged UCF?on the road on Feb. 6, 62-60, the Owls gave 10th-year head coach Fran Dunphy his 517th career victory to make him the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history.
• DeCosey is Temple's leading scorer this season with 16.4 points per game, ranking third in the conference, and has scored in double figures in 23 of 25 contests including the last 13 straight. He has scored 1,396 points to rank 28th all-time in program history. When he scores at least 20 points, the Owls are 8-1 this season.
• With a win vs. #8 SMU on Jan. 24, Temple has now taken down a Top 10 team in seven of the last eight seasons.
• Senior Devin Coleman went a perfect 8-of-8 from the field including 7-of-7 from long range against SMU. He scored a career and game-high 23 points, and was named The American's Player of the Week.
• With 7.9 made three-pointers per game, Temple leads all teams in the American Athletic Conference.
• As a team, the Owls rank third in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 9.2. They have recorded single digit turnovers in 15 of 25 games, tallying as few as five (vs. Delaware on Nov. 29 and at USF on Jan. 31).
• The Owls have three regular-season wins over Top 25 teams, the most since 1999-00. This season also marks the first since 1998 that the Owls have beaten two Top 25 opponents on the road. Temple has beaten at least one ranked opponent for nine straight seasons.
• Houston comes into Saturday's game at 19-7 overall and having won three straight and six of its last seven. Four players are averaging in double figures in scoring for the Cougars, led by sophomore guard Rob Gray, Jr. at 17.1 ppg. With 78.7 ppg as a team, Houston leads all teams in The American.

Temple vs. Houston
• Temple and Houston are meeting for the fifth time, with the Cougars holding a 3-1 lead in the series.
• The Cougars handed Temple a big loss earlier this year on the Owls' home court, winning 77-50.
• Houston won both meetings in 2013-14, but the Owls won 66-54 at home in the only meeting of the 2014-15 season. Houston's wins the year before came by scores of 88-74 on its home court and 89-79 at Temple on March 1, 2014.
• Second-year Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson is 1-2 against Temple, losing to the Owls last season and also losing 61-43 (March 17, 1996) in the NCAA First Round while he was the head coach at Oklahoma.
