Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Overtime Heartbreaker Against Providence
9.16.16 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - After an impressive late comeback for Temple field hockey against Providence (5-2, 1-0), the game ended in heartbreak for the Owls who lost 3-2 in overtime in their BIG EAST opener. Temple (1-6, 0-1) trailed by two with just over five minutes left in regulation before tying the game with back-to-back goals.
"We definitely come away with belief in what we're able to do in the amount of time we have to do it," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "To score twice in the last minutes of the game says a lot about our program. The issue is to have that mentality from the start, which is something we've come out slow with."
The Friars' leading scorer, freshman Adrienne Houle, scored the game-winner on a scramble in the 11th minute of overtime.
Both defenses were strong all game long, with 21 combined saves between the two teams. Freshman Maddie Lilliock tied her season high with 11 saves for the Owls, while Megan Guilbert posted eight saves for Providence. The Friars' Megan Hamilton came up with two defensive saves, including one in the minute before her teammate Houle scored the game-winner.
Temple had 14 chances on penalty corners in the game, but came up short on the first 11 of those and finished with just one goal on a corner. Meanwhile, Providence earned only seven corners but scored two of its three goals on those opportunities.
Hamilton scored the first of those corner goals for Providence in the 12th minute of the first half, collecting the ball on a rebounded shot and save by Lilliock. It would be 20 minutes before Providence added its second goal with just three and a half minutes left before halftime. Mary O'Reilly sent in a long pass from the right side, and Natalie Mitchell one-timed it into the cage to give the Friars a 2-0 lead at the break.
Most of the second half was a stalemate, and Providence was able to hold its two-goal advantage for nearly 30 minutes before the Owls' comeback began.
With 5:07 remaining in regulation, junior Rachael Mueller scored on a rebounded shot and save to put Temple on the board. After a Providence timeout, freshman Maddie Merton wasted little time in scoring the game-tying goal, sending a perfect long ball in from the far right of the circle.
Temple had two more penalty corners and dominated offensively in the last four minutes, but Providence's defense kept the game tied through the end of regulation. After 10 minutes of extra hockey, Houle chipped in a shot that deflected off Lilliock's foot and into the goal for the win.
The Owls will take a break from conference play on Sunday, Sept. 18, hosting Monmouth at 1 p.m. for Alumni Day.
