Field Hockey Hosts BIG EAST Foe Georgetown on Friday Evening

PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey is returning home for a pair of games this weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday, Sept. 30 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The Owls (2-8) and the Hoyas (3-7) are both looking for their first conference win after going 0-2 so far. On Sunday at noon, Temple will host non-conference opponent Holy Cross.

» The Owls are looking for their first BIG EAST win after a tough, 3-2 overtime loss to Providence on Sept. 16 and a 6-0 loss at No. 3 UConn (now No. 1) on Sept. 23.
» Temple was picked to finish fourth of eight teams in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, and will need to match that pick or better to earn a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament the Owls will host Nov. 4 and 6.

She tied her season high with 11 saves against the Friars, and added eight against the Hawks. Lilliock's 86 total saves lead all players in the league, while her 8.60 saves per game rank fourth in NCAA Division I.Â
» Temple trailed 2-0 to Providence in its BIG EAST opener on Sept. 16 before scoring two goals in the final six minutes of regulation to force overtime. Ten minutes into the extra period, Providence's Adrienne Houle scored the game-winner.
» Temple field hockey celebrated the grand opening of Howarth Field on Sept. 2 when the Owls hosted No. 18 Penn State. The field is named in recognition of a $500,000 gift from field hockey alum Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth and her husband, Greg.

Scouting Georgetown
The Hoyas have started the season at 3-7, but lost all seven in a row before earning a 3-2 win vs. Lehigh in their most recent game on Sept. 25. Georgetown is looking for its first BIG EAST win after a 4-2 loss to Quinnipiac and a 5-0 loss against No. 17 Old Dominion. Junior Michaela Bruno, sophomore Sam Hickey and freshman Lindsay Getz have each scored three goals to lead the Hoyas, with Bruno totaling a team-best eight points overall. Senior Rachel Skonecki has started all 10 games in goal for Georgetown with a save percentage of .705 (79 saves/33 goals allowed). The Hoyas finished 8-11 overall last season, and are still looking for their first-ever BIG EAST Tournament berth.
Temple leads Georgetown 7-2 in the all-time series, and has won seven in a row including a 3-1 win at home last season. The Hoyas' last win in the series came back in 2000.
Defensively-Minded
With three defensive saves so far in 2016, freshman Becky Gerhart and senior Ali Meszaros are tied for sixth among all players in NCAA Division I. With seven defensive saves as a team, the Owls rank fifth in the nation. Freshman Maddie Lilliock's 8.60 saves per game rank fourth in the nation, and the Owls' 9.40 saves per game rank sixth.

As of the NFHCA Preseason Top 20 Coaches Poll for Sept. 27, five of Temple's opponents are nationally ranked. The Owls have already faced No. 2 Syracuse (now No. 4), No. 18 Penn State (now No. 5), No. 10 Delaware and No. 3 UConn (now No. 1). Still upcoming on the schedule is No. 14 ODU (Oct. 7).
