Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision to Bucknell at Home

8.27.17 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Bucknell (1-1) made the most of its huge advantage in penalty corners, handing Temple field hockey (0-2) a 3-1 loss at Howarth Field on Sunday afternoon. The Owls' only goal of the game also came on a corner, but it was one of just two they were awarded.

Keys to the Game
> Less than nine minutes remained in the first half before either team got on the scoreboard. Bucknell struck first in the 27th minute as Mackenzie Haney redirected a shot by Lexi Quick on a corner.

> Bucknell's 1-0 lead stood for the next 24 minutes of action, until Temple scored in the 51st minute.

> The Owls' goal came on one of two penalty corners they earned in the game. Redshirt senior Sarah Keer fired the shot that went off Bucknell goalkeeper Emily Finn and into the cage.

> Despite increased pressure, Temple was unable to get off another shot in the contest.

> Bucknell scored two more goals on corners in the 56th minute and 62nd minute for the final tally of 3-1.

Game Notes
> Bucknell had 11 penalty corner opportunities in the game compared to just two for Temple, and the all three of the Bison's goals were scored on those chances.

> Total shots in the game also favored the Bison, 18-6, and they finished with a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.

> Temple sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made five saves, while junior Nellie Doyle and redshirt junior Ashley Kucera each recorded a defensive save.

> Senior Rachael Mueller and redshirt junior Maris Stern each tallied assists on Temple's goal.

> Three of the Owls' four shots on goal came from Mueller, who has one goal on the season from Temple's first game against Saint Joseph's.

Quotable
"We will be emphasizing defensive penalty corners (in practice). We need to work on our set pieces and on the execution of our attack. We also need to have more of a 'grit' mentality." - Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman

Next Up
> The Owls will play their next five games away from home, starting with a 6 p.m. contest at #7 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 1.
