Field Hockey Travels to Providence for BIG EAST Opener on Friday

PHILADELPHIA - The BIG EAST Conference slate begins on Friday, Sept. 15 for Temple field hockey, as the Owls travel to Providence for a 6 p.m. contest. The Friars will serve as hosts for the four-team BIG EAST Tournament, set for Nov. 3 and 5. Temple will remain on the road Sunday, heading to Holy Cross for a noon game.
Scouting Temple
> The Owls, in the midst of a five-game road swing, are coming off their first win of the season in a defensive battle against Kent State on Saturday, Sept. 8.
> Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock tied her career high with 11 saves vs. Kent State, and redshirt senior Sarah Keer scored the game-winning and only goal of the contest with just over a minute remaining.
>Â Temple started the season with four losses, including two against Top 15 teams and another to Saint Joseph's, now ranked in the Top 25. The Owls split games last weekend, falling 9-1 to #14 Northwestern before defeating Kent State.
>Â Senior Rachael Mueller and Keer are the Owls' lone goal-scorers so far in 2017, tallying two goals apiece. Mueller also leads the Owls with two assists for a team-best six total points.Â
>Â With six defensive saves, the Owls lead all teams in NCAA Division I. Junior Nellie Doyle and redshirt junior Ashley Kucera lead the way with two defensive saves each, while sophomore Becky Gerhart and freshman Dani Batze have one apiece.

> The Friars are 3-3 overall, with two of their three losses coming to teams in the Top 15 (#14 Northwestern, #8 Boston College). Providence shut out #24 Maine, 1-0, in its season opener.
> Four Friars are tied for the team lead in points, with four each. Senior Megan Hamilton and junior Natalie Mitchell have each tallied two goals, and freshman Manon van Weezel has a team-best four assists.
> Â Last year, the Friars finished with a 13-6 overall record and finished second in the BIG EAST Conference with a 5-2 mark in league play. Providence returned 18 letterwinners from last year's squad, including eight players with significant experience in the starting line-up.

> Temple holds a 4-2 lead all-time against Providence, but the Friars' two wins have been in each of the last two seasons.
> The past three meetings have all gone to extra time in a few intense battles between the teams. Providence won 3-2 in overtime in Philadelphia last year, and 1-0 in a shootout on its home field in 2015.
