Men's Basketball Goes for Win Number Five in a Row at USF on Saturday

2.9.18 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball could make it five straight wins on Saturday, Feb. 10 as the Owls (14-10, 6-6) head to USF (8-17, 1-11) for a noon game (ESPNU / 1210 AM WPHT). The momentum has been solidly with Temple as of late, with the Owls defeating #16/16 Wichita State, earning the program's 1,900th win (vs. ECU) and scoring 80 or more points in all four of their recent wins.

Scouting Temple
> Temple is in the midst of a strong stretch, having won four straight and six of its last seven including an overtime win vs. #16/16 Wichita State on Feb. 1.
> The Owls notched their 1,900th program win with a 90-73 defeat of ECU on Feb. 7, led by sophomore Quinton Rose with 23 points. Rose was one of six to reach double figures in scoring for Temple, as the Owls achieved that feat for the first time since an overtime win vs. La Salle on Nov. 11, 2016.
> Freshman J.P. Moorman II came off the bench for his first career double-double in the ECU win, adding a career-high 12 rebounds to a career-high 11 points. His points-rebound double-double was the first by a freshman since Lavoy Allen in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
> The Owls have now scored 80 or more points in four straight games for the first time since a four-game stretch in 2006-07, head coach Fran Dunphy's first year with the program.
> Eleven of Temple's 24 games have been decided by five or fewer points this season, and the Owls are 6-5 in those contests.
> The freshman class has been very impactful as of late, particularly Pierre-Louis who ranks third on the team in scoring for AAC games (10.8 ppg) and scored a career-high 23 points vs. Memphis.
> Rose is the Owls' leading scorer with 14.7 ppg, ranking ninth in the league. Junior Shizz Alston, Jr. is averaging 13.2 ppg (15th in the AAC).
> Either Rose or Alston have led or tied for the team lead in scoring in 18 of 24 of Temple's games in 2017-18.

Scouting USF
> The Bulls have lost four straight and 11 of their last 12, winning only one AAC game at Tulane, 80-75 on Jan. 25.
> Most recently, USF lost a close one at UConn, 68-65 on Feb. 7. The Bulls had a chance to tie it in the end, but a three-point attempt from David Collins fell short.
> Stephan Jiggetts leads USF with 12.6 ppg, while Payton Banks is close behind with 12.2 ppg.
> Free-throw shooting is a strength for USF, who shoots 72.7 percent from the line to rank fourth in the AAC. Both Jiggetts and Terrence Samuel (7.4 ppg) rank in the top eight among AAC players in free-throw percentage.
> Head coach Brian Gregory is in his first season with the Bulls after five years at Georgia Tech (2011-16) and eight at Dayton (2003-11). Gregory has a 4-5 all-time record against Temple from his years at Dayton.

All-Time Series
> Temple and USF have met 10 times, with the Owls leading 8-2 in the all-time series.
> The?Owls have won eight in a row and have never lost at USF, going 4-0.
> Temple won 83-74 on the road last year, and won 72-60 at home a month later. Seven points is the closest margin of victory for the Owls since 2014.
> Temple also won both meetings in 2014-15. The Owls won 73-48 on Jan. 22 at home, and later won 61-48 at USF on Feb. 4.
> The first meeting in the series was six years ago in the NCAA Second Round at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. The Bulls won by a score of 58-44 after trailing Temple 19-15 at halftime. USF also won the first-ever meeting as conference opponents on Jan. 9, 2014, 75-82, but has not won since.
