Field Hockey Drops BIG EAST Contest at No. 2 UConn

9.28.18 | Field Hockey

STORRS, Conn. - The defending national champion UConn Huskies (10-0, 3-0) showed their offensive prowess against Temple field hockey, handing the Owls (2-8, 0-3) a 7-0 loss in BIG EAST play.

Game Summary
> The Owls held their own early on, matching the Huskies with two shots on goal each in the first 10 minutes.
> UConn scored its first goal in the 16th minute after a rebounded shot and save by senior goalkeeper Chloe Johnson, but Temple then held the Huskies without a second goal for the next 10 minutes of action.
> The Huskies, who earned 11 first-half penalty corners, scored on two of them before halftime. The second of those came just two minutes before the break, giving UConn a 3-0 lead.
> Cecile Pieper and Abby Gooderham each scored their second goals in the second half, with the second by Gooderham being UConn's seventh and final goal on a corner in the 58th minute.
> The Owls pressed hard late and had three penalty corners, getting five total in the half compared to four for UConn.
> Junior Kathryn Edgar took two shots on those late corners, but one was blocked and another was saved.

Individual Highlights
> Johnson finished with 12 saves, making it her fifth double-digit save performance of the season.
> Edgar took five of the Owls' 10 total shots, and two of their four shots on goal.

Postgame Quotes from Head Coach Marybeth Freeman
> "There's no doubt that UConn is a talented team, but the way our team came out - the grit we played with and work ethic we displayed - is something we can be proud of. Are there things we could have executed better? Of course. It's not just good enough for us to get corners and attacking opportunities, we need to be able to finish the play. But there is something to be said about us out-cornering them in the second half. Something to be said about how everyone was on board with the game plan, giving UConn challenges that maybe other teams don't have the guts to do. Yes, we could have done things better on the field. But whatever we did, we performed as a team. And that is an empowering feeling for this group."
