DMR Record Shatters on Day One of Columbia Challenge

NEW YORK – The Temple University track and field squad got off to a thrilling start at the Columbia Challenge on Friday afternoon. Running their first distance medley relay of the season, the Owls crushed the program record by over 13 seconds to set the tone for the rest of the meet, which will continue into tomorrow, Jan. 26.
Today's Performances
> The day was highlighted by an impressive Distance Medley Relay made up of sophomore Helene Gottlieb, junior Millie Howard, freshman Marissa White and junior Grace Moore. Howard toed the starting line for the Owls, running a speedy 1200m with a split of 3:29.4. Propelling the momentum, White took the handoff to break into a 400m, which she split at 56.08. Gottlieb ran the third leg, racing the 800m portion in 2:10.5. Moore anchored the event, closing the gap with a 4:46.9 mile split. Overall, the Owls placed fourth with a time of 11:23.03, surpassing the previous school record of 11:36.18 from last season by an outstanding margin.

> "The DMR team of Millie, Marissa, Helene and Grace smashed the school and posted an outstanding time," said head coach Elvis Forde. "They had some very strong competition with Villanova and Columbia, and they stepped up to the plate and performed the way we expected them to. Millie led off with a fantastic first leg, Marissa just keeps getting better and better, Helene had a solid 800 race and Grace at the end was outstanding. They did a great job, and hopefully that will continue into tomorrow and we look forward to some exciting things to come. This is a great atmosphere, and we are looking forward to another special day."

> The Owls will use this momentum to roll into day two of the Columbia Challenge tomorrow, Jan. 26. Running events will begin at 10 a.m. at the Armory in New York City, and Temple will debut in field events at 1:30 p.m.
