Creighton Tops Women’s Basketball, 69-59

CANCUN, Mexico - Shannen Atkinson recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, but a big second half by Creighton allowed the Bluejays to top Temple 69-59 Friday evening at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun. Creighton improves their overall record to 6-1 while the Owls suffer their second consecutive loss and fall to 4-4 on the year.
Keys to the Game
> Jaylyn Agnew, who entered tonight's contest averaging 3.5 three-pointers per game, was only able to knock down one shot from beyond the arc as a result of the Owls defense.
> Temi Carda stepped up for the Bluejays to register a team-high 17 points, including three triples.
> Mykel Parham tied Atkinson for a game-high 11 rebounds. Parham pulled down a game-high of four offensive boards to give Creighton more second-chance scoring opportunities.
> Temple outscored the Bluejays 16-11 in the first quarter, but Creighton quickly worked their way out of the deficit to outscore the Owls the remaining three quarters.
> After having trouble getting shots to fall in the first quarter, the Bluejays ended the game with six three-pointers and went 19-for-27 from the foul line to push themselves past the Owls.
> Despite the loss, Temple outshot Creighton 42.1% to 37.9% from the field and held the edge in rebounding, 39-38.
Individual Highlights
> Atkinson added a block and an assist to her double-double performance. The senior earned All-Tournament team honors after finishing the week averaging 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.
> Mia Davis led all players with 18 points while Ashley Jones added 14 for the Owls.
> Asonah Alexander pulled down nine boards for Temple and recorded a game-high three assists.
First Quarter
> The Bluejays held the lead for the majority of the first quarter until Jones made two foul shots to give Temple a one-point edge with less than two minutes to go.
> Marissa Mackins and Emani Mayo both registered three-pointers down the stretch to give the Owls a five point lead heading into the second quarter.
> The Temple defense was intense in the first 10 minutes of the game, holding Creighton to 31.3% from the field and 12.5% from three-point range.
> Lena Niang was given the task of guarding the Bluejays top scorer in Jaylyn Agnew, only allowing the sharp-shoot to register two points.
Second Quarter
> The Owls built upon their first quarter lead, distancing themselves by as much as nine points.
> Creighton was only able to score with foul shots until the five minute mark when Tatum Rembao knocked down a jumper.
> The Bluejays would then go on a 13-4 run to close out the first half and tie up the game heading into halftime.
Third Quarter
> The third quarter saw eight lead changes as both teams went bucket-for-bucket.
> Creighton took a lead they wouldn't give up at the 4:35 mark with two free throws from Olivia Elger, followed by a good jumper from Parham.
> Niang cut the lead to one in the final minute with a layup, but Agnew knocked down a jump shot to give the Bluejays a three-point lead at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
> Davis brought the Owls within one point of Creighton with a layup in the opening minute of the final quarter, but the Bluejays began to distance themselves and would not let Temple come within more than three points the remainder of the game.
> Elger recorded two three-pointers and Rembao added one in the final frame to help extend the Bluejays lead.
