3.11.19 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey staff has been completed with the retention of assistant coach Ross Gilham-Jones and director of operations Courtney Konowal as well as the addition of volunteer assistant Ally Mooney. First-year head coach Susan Ciufo announced the finalized staff after bringing assistant coach Michelle Vittese on board earlier this week.

"I am extremely excited to round out our staff with the addition of Ally," said Ciufo. "Ally is a fierce competitor in the cage and a wonderful addition for our goalkeepers. Ally comes from a strong culture of success and understands what it takes to perform in pressure moments. Our program has gained a great player, young energetic coach and most importantly, a great person.

"It was a no-brainer to keep Ross and Courtney on board. Ross has an exponential amount of playing experience with and against the best in the world. Ross's fun-loving personality paired with his ability to teach the smallest details of the game make him a great asset to our program. Courtney is the strength in everything behind the scenes for our program. In just a month she has helped me with countless tasks, Her thoroughness and love for the people around her make her special. We are thrilled with the staff we have put in place and can't wait to see the progression of this program in the next few months."

England native Gilham-Jones joined the staff in mid-September of the 2018 season, and served as interim head coach from November, 2018 until January, 2019. He had previously been coaching the Pottstown-based WC Eagles field hockey club.

An extremely accomplished player internationally, Gilham-Jones played for England's U16, U18 and U21 National Teams from 2007-13 before being selected to the Great Britain program in the lead-up to the Rio Olympic Games. His U21 team achieved a silver medal at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. He captained the U18 and U21 teams and scored a hat trick against Scotland in the European U21 Championships.

He was named 2013 Sportsman of the Year at Canterbury Christchurch University where he graduated from in 2015, and also played for Canterbury in the English Hockey League from 2013-15. Following graduation, Gilham-Jones played for the YMCC Hockey Club (2015-16) where he and his teammates won the league title and played for Doncaster Hockey Club (2016-17) in Australia's Premier League where they finished in second place.

Gilham-Jones founded the Australia-based LEAP Hockey Academy and has served as director and head coach since 2015, providing sessions for athletes to learn, enjoy, achieve and progress (LEAP) to the next level.

Mooney recently wrapped up an outstanding playing career at Shippensburg University where the Raiders finished 19-4 this past season and won the NCAA Division II Championship with a 1-0 overtime victory over East Stroudsburg. It was Mooney's and Shippensburg's third straight national title, and she earned All-America honors twice (first team in 2016, second team in 2014).

Mooney, a goalkeeper, was named to the All-Tournament team for the third time and finished her career with a 9-1 record in NCAA Tournament play. Her only loss came in the quarterfinals in her freshman season. The two-time team captain finished with a 68-16 record with 24 shutouts for her career.

In December of 2018, Mooney graduated from Shippensburg with a bachelor's degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching.

After a standout, four-year career at Kutztown University, Konowal joined the Temple field hockey staff as the director of operations in August, 2018. She earned her bachelor's degree in leisure and sports studies from Kutztown and is working toward a master's degree in sport business from Temple.

Konowal was a four-time All-PSAC selection while at Kutztown, and served as team captain in both her junior and senior seasons. She was recognized numerous times for her work off the field as well, including being named Kutztown's Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team, both in her senior year. She was a four-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction, a four-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and a three-time recipient of an NCAA Division I Athletic Director's Association Academic Achievement Award.

Starting in every game for Kutztown throughout her four years, Konowal scored 12 goals and added 12 assists for 36 total points.

During the spring of her senior year, Konowal gained athletic department experience at Villanova University as an athletics business office intern. She also worked at A-G Administrators - Sports Insurance Specialists in the summer of 2018, and has had experiences both coaching and on the administrative side at various levels of youth field hockey.
