Field Hockey to Host Hofstra in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team is kicking off its highly anticipated spring 2021 season Friday afternoon, hosting Hofstra at 1 p.m. This will be the first time since November 2019 that the Owls will take the field, as the 2020 season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scouting Temple
> Under the direction of second-year head coach Susan Ciufo, the Owls ended last season 7-10 (2-5 BIG East).Â
> Dani Batze returns as 2019's leading scorer, with four of her six goals being game-winners. The Eden, Md. also led the team in shots (31), points (12), and her five defensive saves tied for eighth in the nation. Her 16 career defensive saves tied for fourth among NCAA active players.
> Also on the backline is Nienke Oerlemans, the team's 2019 leader in assists with six.
> Cristina Carotenuto returns for her final season in the cage, coming up big for the Owls in 2019 with four shutouts and a .729 save percentage.Â
> The Owls have added nine newcomers to the squad in the offseason, including seven freshmen, one transfer, and one graduate student.Â

> Hofstra is under the direction of second-year head coach Courtney Veinotte, who previously served as associate head coach for the Pride for two years.
> The team was outscored 32-53 last season, going 8-10. Last season's goals leader Camilla Larsson will return for her junior season.
> Merlijn van der Vegt will return to the cage, earning the starting spot last season as a true freshman. Van der Vegt recorded 99 saves for a 2.44 GAA and a 71.7 save percentage.Â

> This will be the 11th time that the two teams are meeting, with Temple holding an 8-2 advantage.
> The Pride won the last matchup (2-1 OT) at home, winning two of the last three meetings.
