Field Hockey Falls in Shootout Heartbreaker

2.20.21 | Field Hockey

NORFOLK, Va. - The Temple field hockey team fell 3-2 in a shootout at Old Dominion, dropping its first match in league play. With the loss, the Owls fall to 1-1 (0-1 AAC) while the Monarchs improve to 1-1 (1-0 AAC).

Recapping the Game
> The Monarchs jumped ahead early, scoring just under two minutes into the first quarter off a penalty corner.
> Dani Batze found the equalizer in the 42nd minute, assisted by Claire Thomas and Veronika Novakova on the penalty corner.
> Marlon de Bruijne netted her second goal of the day for Old Dominion, pulling ahead in the 46th minute.
> Temple once again evened the score, with Novakova tipping it in less than a minute later and forcing overtime.
> Neither team found the game-winner in the overtime periods, forcing a shootout situation.
> Both teams missed the first two strokes, while Temple pulled ahead two strokes to one after the first four attempts.
> ODU evened the stroke count on the fifth attempt, netting the game-winner on the eighth stroke.

Statistically Speaking
> The Cherry and White out shot the Monarchs 13-10, with Batze's four shots leading the team.
> Kaitlyn Cummins and Sydney Borneman each fired two shots, with six other Owls making an attempt.
> Cristina Carotenuto recorded five saves to Old Dominion's four.
> The Owls conceded seven penalty corners.

Quotable
> "Today was the type of hockey we love to play, a fun game with high intensity on both ends of the ball. I'm so proud of the fight and improvement in our team. To have one of our attackers go down with an injury in the first two minutes and an ODU goal immediately following was a good test for our ladies to work through. To bring a very skilled ODU team to a sudden death shootout is great growth and we're excited to continue to work on the connection and intent of our attack in order to pull out the win tomorrow." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo
