Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision at Old Dominion

2.21.21 | Field Hockey

NORFOLK, Va. - In its second game of a two-game series at Old Dominion, the Temple field hockey team fell 1-0 Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Owls fall to 1-2 (0-2 BIG EAST) while the Monarchs improved to 2-1 (2-0 BIG EAST).

Recapping the Game
> ODU went up late in the first quarter, scoring with five seconds left on the clock.
> Temple had a chance to even the score before halftime, putting two shots on target that were kept out of the cage by the Monarchs' keeper.
> The Cherry and White defense came out hot in the third quarter, recording two blocks and two saves to keep Old Dominion from widening the score.
> The Owls' final chance to find the equalizer came in the last minute of the game, but the team was unable to convert on two penalty corners.

Statistically Speaking
> The Monarchs outshot Temple 14-3, but the Owls' shots were more accurate. Temple put two shots on goal for a .667 shots on goal percentage compared to ODU's six shots on goal for a .429 shots on goal percentage.
> Claire Thomas's two shots led the team, while Nienke Oerleman's defensive save was the first of the season for the Owls.
> Cristina Carotenuto recorded four saves, one shy of her season-high.

Quotable
> "Today was a tough game for us. We really lacked energy to start the game and allowed ODU to convert on their game plan which was to possess the ball and make us run defensively. It's hard to have energy when you're playing defense the entire game. We have a lot to learn from today in our need for the group to be threatening on attack and trust that they can take on the defenders. We have another tough weekend ahead against Liberty next week so we will get back to work in preparation." – Temple head coach Susan Ciufo

Next Up
> The Owls will return to Broad Street to host Liberty for a pair of weekend games in the first of a four-game series. Temple will face the Flames on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28, with both games scheduled for 12 p.m.
