Men’s Basketball Falls to Richmond, 61-49

11.22.22 | Men's Basketball

BROOKLYN – In his first start of the season, Khalif Battle led all scorers with 26 points, but Richmond held the rest of the Temple squad in check in posting a 61-49 win in the third-place game of the Empire Classic at the Barclays Center Tuesday night. The Owls fall to 2-4 on the season while the Spiders improve to 3-3.

Tyler Burton led Richmond with 18 points while Hysier Miller tallied 10 points and a career and team high seven rebounds.

First Half
> Battle made his first start of the season in place of an injured Jahlil White (knee) and scored the Owls' first eight points.
> Temple built its lead to 11-4 on a Miller three and continued to hold the Spiders at arm's length with a tenacious defense.
> After Battle made a layup to put the Owls ahead 16-7, the Cherry and White went cold. Temple turned the ball over eight times in four-plus minutes while Richmond ran off 15-straight points to take a 22-16 lead. Zach Hicks drained a three to stop the bleeding at the 3:43 mark.
> The Spiders ran off five-straight points before a Battle basket made the score 27-21 at the break.
> Temple turned the ball over 14 times in the period while forcing just four Richmond miscues.
> Damian Dunn was scoreless and limited to 10 minutes due to foul trouble.

Second Half
> Battle drained two threes to start the second half and the Owls cut the margin to 31-27 by the first media timeout.  He would drain two treys following a Miller three to push Temple back in front, 36-33, with 13:31 on the clock.
> Richmond then went on a 9-2 run with a three by Andre Gustavson making it a 45-38 Spider lead with just under 10 to play.
> After a Dunn free throw, the Spiders scored 12 of the next 14 points with Burton accounting for six to make it 55-41.
> Temple would hold the Spiders to six the rest of the way but could not mount a comeback.

Game Notes
> After setting a career high with 21 points Monday, Jamille Reynolds was held to 0-of-1 from the field.
> Dunn was held to a season-low one point.
