Men’s Basketball Hosts City-Rival Drexel Sunday

11.25.22 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Following a four-day Thanksgiving break, Temple returns to the Liacouras Center to take on city-rival Drexel Sunday (2 pm/ESPN+/1210 AM WPHT).

The Owls (2-4) will be looking to rebound from losses to St. John's and Richmond at the Empire Classic while the Dragons (3-3) are also coming off consecutive losses at the Gulf Coast Showcase.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Temple has opened its season 2-4 for the first time since 2007-08.  That Owls squad rebounded to finish the year 21-13 and win its first of three straight Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.
> After a season-low one point, preseason First Team All-American Athletic Conference selection Damian Dunn now ranks fourth in the American Athletic Conference in scoring (18.0 ppg). He leads Temple in scoring but has averaged just 6.3 ppg over the last three games after tallying a career-high 38 points in the Owls' 89-87 overtime loss to Vanderbilt.  That was the most points by a Temple player since 2004.
> Two other Owls average double figure scorers: preseason second team All-AAC Khalif Battle (17.7 ppg) and Jamille Reynolds (12.3 ppg., 7.2 rpg.).  Battle, who has averaged 22.3 points per game over the last three outings, scored 24 points in the Rutgers game to garner MVP honors of the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase and 26 against Richmond.   Reynolds, who leads the team in FG percentage (.593), had tallied a career-high 21 against St. John's.
> Zach Hicks (9.5 ppg) and Hysier Miller (6.7 ppg., 5.2 apg) round out the starting five from the team's game against Richmond.  Jahlil White, who started the first five games, missed the Richmond game due to a knee injury.  He is day-to-day.

SCOUTING DREXEL
> Like Temple, the Dragons are coming off consecutive losses at an in-season tournament (Gulf Coast Showcase) and enters Sunday's game with a 3-3 record.
> Amari Williams (15.8 ppg., 8.4 rpg.) leads a balanced Drexel attack that features three double figure scorers in the starting lineup.
> Joining Williams is Coletrane Washington, who is averaging 12.8 points along with a team-high 18 three-pointers (.474) and Lamar Oden, Jr. (10.0 ppg., 6.7 rpg.).
> Justin Moore (8.8 ppg., 15 assists) runs the Dragon offense with Mate Okros (4.7 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) rounding out the starting five.
> Drexel is holding its opponents to 59.7 ppg., ranking xxth in the nation in scoring defense.

SERIES HISTORY
> Temple leads Drexel 31-9 all-time and has won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
lone Drexel win in that stretch came on Dec. 22, 2006.
> The Owls meeting with the Dragons last year was canceled due to Covid protocol issues with the Dragons program.
> Drexel was Aaron McKie's first win as Temple coach, 70-62, at the Liacouras Center on Nov. 5, 2019.
> Six of Drexel's nine wins in the series were over 100 years ago, as the Dragons
went 6-2 in games against Temple from 1901 to 1908.

LAST MEETING:  @Temple 70, Drexel 62 (Nov. 5, 2019)
> Aaron McKie made his debut as the Temple men's basketball head coach a successful one as the Owls held off city-foe Drexel for a 70-62 win at the Liacouras Center.
> Temple looked equally good and bad during their season-opener, making athletic plays like a first half tomahawk dunk by Quinton Rose while making unforced turnovers that kept them from pulling away from the upstart Dragons.
> Temple made 11 steals in the contests while forcing 17 turnovers.  On the flipside, the Dragons won the battle of the boards, 46-39, and pulled down 16 offensive caroms.
> With the score deadlocked (31-31) at the half, Nate Pierre-Louis (16 pts, 10 rebs) took over for the Owls.  He scored 12 of his 14 second half points over a 10-minute stretch to lift Temple to a 54-42 advantage.
> Drexel hung around and eventually cut the deficit to five, 65-60, with just over a minute to play, but a three-point play by Alani Moore II pushed it back to 68-60 and the Owls coasted home from there.

LAST GAME:  Richmond 61, Temple 49 @Empire Classic (Barclays Center)
> In his first start of the season, Khalif Battle led all scorers with 26 points, but Richmond held the rest of the Temple squad in check in posting a 61-49 win in the third-place game of the Empire Classic.
> > Trailing 27-21 at the half, Battle ignited a 15-6 Temple run with four threes over the first seven minutes.  Hysier Miller added a three to give the Owls a 36-33 lead.
> Richmond then went on a 9-2 run with a three by Andre Gustavson making it a 45-38 Spider lead with just under 10 to play.
> After a Damian Dunn free throw, the only point of the game for Temple's leading scorer entering play, the Spiders scored 12 of the next 14 points with Tyler Burton accounting for six to make it 55-41.
> Temple would hold the Spiders to six the rest of the way but could not mount a comeback.
