Field Hockey to Open 2022 Campaign

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team will split the weekend to open the 2022 season, facing Lafayette on the road on Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. before hosting Lehigh on Aug. 28 at 12 p.m. Both games will be steamed on ESPN+.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
> The Owls open up the season at Lafayette, the first time since 2018 that the team has opened its season on the road.Â
> Temple returns the majority of its starting lineup, including three graduate students in Annie Judge, Nienke Oerlemans, and Tali Popinko. The team also returns its 2021 leading scorer, Julianne Kopec.
> Kopec and Oerlemans were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, with Temple being projected to finish fourth in the conference standings. The top four teams in the league will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament.Â
> Last season, the Cherry and White 8-11 (4-3 BIG EAST) in 2021, advancing to the BIG EAST Conference Tournament for the second-straight year. The Owls also defeated then-No. 20 UConn, the first time the team has defeated the Huskies since 1989 and the first time the team has defeated a ranked opponent since 2016. 2021 also marked the first time since 2015 that the Cherry and White has seen a winning season in conference play and the team's best RPI finish since 2014.

>Â Lafayette went 14-6 (5-3 Patriot) and was the Patriot Tournament Runner-Up in 2021.
> The team was picked to finish second in the league and had three Leopards earn preseason honors. Simone Hefting was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Preseason All-Conference, with Molly McAndrew and Lineke Spaans were also tabbed to the All-Patriot Team.
> Lafayette will return eight players who started a game last season while losing its top goal scorer in Audrey Sawers and starting goalkeeper Hailey Abbott.Â

> Senior Sarah Bonthuis is the top returning scorer and the lone returnee among Lehigh's four All-Patriot League performers from a season ago. Joining Bonthuis are Sydney White, Abbie Brown, Julia Gatelein, and Guusje Hogendoorn, all of who started 17 or more contests a season ago. In the back, Maddie Kahn returns after starting all 18 games in the cage in 2021. Kahn was the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in the spring 2021 season and had a 1.77 goals against average and .698 save percentage last fall.
