Volleyball Welcomes Rider to McGonigle Hall for Midweek Match

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls volleyball team (12-7) returns to McGonigle Hall for a midweek, non-conference match up on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. as they take on the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Rider Broncs (5-13). Wednesday's match will be available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Owls dropped pair of matches last weekend at home against the East Carolina Pirates. On Friday, the Owls were up 2-0 before East Carolina went on to win the final three sets, falling in the match, 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 8-15. The next day, Temple dropped three straight sets to the Pirates, 22-25, 10-25, 19-25.
Graduate transfer Avery Luoma had a great weekend where she accumulated a team-best 19 kills, averaging 2.38 kills per set, and four service aces. Luoma also led the team on the defensive side with 25 digs where she averaged 3.13 digs per set. For the entire weekend, Luoma had four blocks which was second on the team. Against ECU on Friday night, Luoma led the Owls with her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a season-high 15 digs. The next day, Luoma led the Owls for the second match in digs with 10 and added a team-high eight kills.
SCOUTING RIDER
Rider comes into Wednesday's match 5-13 overall after dropping their last three matches.
Last weekend the Broncs dropped a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches in straight sets to Fairfield and Quinnipiac on the road. Offensively, Paige Giehtbrock led the team with 15 kills on the weekend, while setter Molly Frey led the Rider with 29 assists and five service aces. Libero Keegan O'Connor had a team weekend-high of 21 digs.
The Broncs are tied for sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 4-6 record and are led by Jenna Amaro. Amaro leads the team 94 kills and 2.85 kills per set, good for 10th in the MAAC. Amaro and Molly Rohde have teamed up for two of the top hitting percentages in the conference with Amaro hitting the third best mark of the conference with a .282 average, while Rohde is tied for sixth at .249. Ryley Frye is the conference leader with .61 services aces per set, totaling 54 thus far in 2023.
TEMPLE VS. RIDER
The two teams first started their regional series in 1987 with Temple earning wins in each of the 10 matches. The last time the Owls and Broncs squared off was Aug. 27, 2021, when the Cherry and White defeated Rider in five sets, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-1. In the win, Taylor Davenport added herself to the Owls' record book with a school record 15 blocks.
