Late Run Propels Wichita State Past Temple, 79-65

PHILADELPHIA – In a game of runs, it was Wichita State that had the last one, as the Shockers scored 17 of the final 20 points to defeat Temple, 79-65, at the Liacouras Center Thursday night. The Owls extended their losing streak to a season-high of four games in falling to 14-13, 8-6 in AAC play. Wichita State moves to 14-12, 7-7 in league play.
Hysier Miller led the Owls with 17 points while Zach Hicks (15) and Damian Dunn (14) also scored in double figures.
Jaykwon Walton led all scorers with 21 points for Wichita State while James Rojas contributed a double-double (11 pts, 11 rebs).
First Half
> Temple took an early five-point lead, 13-8, on a three-point play by Miller with just over 14 minutes to play.
> The Shockers then scored nine of the next 11, taking their first lead of the half, 17-15, on a Jaron Pierre, Jr. layup.
> That would be the first of nine lead changes in the half with Wichita State, scoring 11 of the final 13 points to take their largest lead, 41-33, into intermission.
> Hicks was the lone bright spot offensively in the period for Temple, making five of six field goals (2-3 from deep) for 12 points.
> The Shockers dominated the Owls on the boards, out-rebounding the Cherry and White, 26-11.
Second Half
> The Owls used a 7-0 run early in the second half to tie the game at 45 at the 14:50 mark on a Kur Jongkuch layup.
> The Shockers would not go away, quickly building their lead back to a high of nine points, 58-49, at the midpoint of the half on a three-point play by Rojas.
> Temple answered with 13 straight points, with Nick Jourdain, Hicks and Dunn (two) draining threes and Miller adding a free throw to make it 62-58, at the 6:23 mark.
> Walton drained a three for the Shockers to end the run and jumpstart a 16-0 run to put Wichita State ahead for good, 74-62, with just under one minute to play.
> Miller drained a three to end the Owls drought, but the Shockers held on for the win.
Statistically Speaking
> Wichita State out-rebounded Temple, 42-26, and shot 46.6 percent from the field compared to 41.1 percent for the Owls.
> Khalif Battle, the Owls' leading scorer at 18.6 ppg. entering the game, was held scoreless (0-4 FG) over 17 minutes of action.
