Temple Field Hockey to Open 2023 Campaign at Home

8.24.23 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Coming off one of its best seasons in nearly a decade, the Temple field hockey team will open its 2023 campaign with a five game homestand. The Owls will host La Salle and Bucknell for its opening weekend, facing the Explorers on Aug. 25 and the Bison on Aug. 27.

Scouting Temple
>  The Owls open up the season at home, hosting Big 5 rival La Salle for the first of a five game homestand. This is the first time since 2003 that the Owls have played their first five games on North Broad.
> Temple returns the majority of its starting lineup from the 2022 season, welcoming six freshman and three graduate transfers to the squad. The Owls will see Molly Frey, Caitlyn Amsden, and McKenna Burkhardt suit up for their fifth and final year.
> Tess Muller was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, with Temple being projected to finish fourth in the conference standings. The top four teams in the league will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament.
> The Cherry and White is coming off its best season in nearly a decade. In 2022, Temple cracked the NFHCA rankings (No. 24) for the first time since 2014 and finished the year ranked No. 23. The Owls qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the third straight year, defeating then-No. 13 UConn for the second straight season, before falling to host school Old Dominion in a semifinal shootout. The team saw its best RPI finish (23) since finishing 11th in 2014.

Season Opener
> The Owls have won their last four season openers, with its last season opening loss coming in 2018 at UC Davis. Temple dropped that game 3-2.
> The Cherry and White has not allowed a goal in its last four season openers.

Scouting La Salle

> La Salle welcomed 10 newcomers to the squad in the offseason, losing seven players from last year's roster.
> The team's leading goal scorer, Tatum Johnson, and starting goalie, Ryan Curley, both return for their senior seasons.

Series History
> This will be the 41st matchup between Temple and La Salle, with the Owls holding a dominant series lead of 35-4-1.
> The Cherry and White is on a seven-game winning streak, last falling to the Explorers in 2010 at DeVincent Field.
> This will be the second straight season the Owls have faced the Explorers, with Temple earning a 2-0 victory at home last year.

Scouting Bucknell
> Bucknell went 5-13 (3-3 Patriot) in 2022 under first year head coach Kelsey Kolojejchick.
> The Bison qualified for the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 4 seed, falling 1-0 to No. 1 seed Boston in the semifinals.
> The team will open the weekend at nearby Drexel on Friday before coming to North Broad on Sunday.
> The Bison return 22 players from last season's roster and welcome five newcomers. The returners accounted for 27 of Bucknell's 32 goals in 2022.
