Last Time Out - Owls Hold Off Wichita State for First Conference Win
Steve Settle III scored 17 with nine rebounds and a career-high six steals as the Owls earned their first conference win of the season with a 68-61 victory against Wichita State on Sunday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The six steals by Settle were the most in a game for a Temple player since Nate Pierre-Louis had six against VCU on November 19, 2018.
  • Hysier Miller matched Settle with 17 points in the game, delivering eight assists and five rebounds.
  • Jahlil White was also in double figures with 11. Matteo Picarelli tallied nine.
  • Sam Hofman added nine rebounds.
  • Temple held Wichita State to just 4-for-15 from three-point range. The four treys tie the fewest in a game against TU this season.
Welcome Back
After missing the games against Portland and South Florida, Jahlil White made his return against the Shockers. In 23 minutes, he scored 11, also grabbing two rebounds with a block and a steal. He has scored in double figures in six of the eight games he has appeared in and is second on the Owls with 6.5 rebounds per game. He has also recorded three double-doubles on the season.

Thievery (Part I)
Steve Settle III has been on a tear taking the ball away since AAC play started. He has 10 steals in two conference matchups, including a career-high six takeaways against Wichita State. His 1.9 swipes per game are seventh in the American. The Glenarden, Md. native has seven games with multiple steals this season and three games with four or more.

Thievery (Part II)
Temple came away with 14 steals against Wichita State, its most in a game since November 9, 2019 against Morgan State, when it also took the ball away 14 times. The Shockers did a good job of swiping the ball as well, coming up with 12 steals.

Get Ahead Early
The trend of whoever leads at halftime wins the game continued on Sunday against Wichita State. Temple is now 8-0 when leading at intermission and 0-7 when trailing at the break.

Shooting Their Shot
Temple enters Wednesday's game 13th in the nation in three-point attempts, averaging 28.9 a contest after taking 37 against the Shockers. The Owls tied a program record when they attempted 38 triples against Old Dominion on December 22.

Scouting Report
East Carolina is 8-7 on the season and 1-1 in the AAC following a 62-57 win against Tulsa on Sunday. The Pirates were selected fifth in the American preseason poll.

Leading the offense for East Carolina is RJ Felton at 16.3 points per game. Also in double figures are Brandon Johnson and Ezra Ausar who are tallying 14.8 and 13.3 per game, respectively. Johnson tops the team and is second in the conference at 9.2 rebounds a night. Bobby Pettiford, Jr. has dished 54 assists.

The Pirates have done a large part of their scoring at the line this season, ranking in the top-40 nationally in free throw attempts at 23.1 an outing. Ausar in particular has made his mark at the charity stripe with 107 attempts on the year, 21st in NCAA Division I, scoring 37.6 percent of his points at the line. ECU has also done a good job of getting second chance opportunities with 13.1 offensive rebounds a contest.

For as much as they get their own second chance looks, the Pirates give up their fair share as well, sitting in the bottom-40 nationally at 23.7 defensive rebounds per game. They are also reliant on their starting lineup as ECU is 338th out of 351 teams in Division I in bench scoring, getting just 13.0 points a contest from their reserves.

Michael Schwartz is in his second season leading East Carolina with a record of 24-24 in Greenville. It is his first stint as a collegiate head coach following assistant coaching stops at Tennessee, Tulsa and Fresno State and Miami.

All-Time Series
Wednesday is the 16th all-time meeting between the Owls and Pirates with Temple holding an 11-4 advantage. TU has won four in a row against ECU.

Last Time Against East Carolina
Jahlil White filled the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block as the Owls topped the Pirates 73-58 on January 18, 2023.

Right Where We Want Them
Temple is 7-0 all-time at the Liacouras Center against East Carolina.

Out Of Conference Experience
Temple finished its non-conference schedule 7-6. It is the sixth time in the last seven seasons the Owls have finished with a winning record in a full season outside of AAC play.

Half A Dozen
Temple has placed five players with 10 or more points in a game four times this year, but December 6 against Bloomsburg was the second time this season the Owls placed six players in double figure scoring. TU also accomplished the feat against La Salle. They are the first such games since February 7, 2018 when Quinton Rose (23), Josh Brown (17), Shizz Alston, Jr. (14), J.P. Moorman II (11), Ernest Aflakpui (10) and Nate Pierre-Louis (10) all tallied 10 or more in a 90-73 win against East Carolina.

Putting In Extra Work
By going to triple overtime, the game against La Salle on November 29 entered some rare territory. It was the first 3OT game for the Owls since an 83-82 win at Massachusetts on February 11, 1990. The game was also just the fifth triple overtime game in Big 5 history and the first since La Salle downed Villanova, 84-83 on December 20, 1980.

Up Next
Temple goes on the road for the first of two games in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro region when it takes on North Texas on Saturday, January 13. Tipoff from the UNT Coliseum is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EST with the game broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
