Volleyball Prepares For Wednesday Matinee Versus Binghamton

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team will be in action on Wednesday in McGonigle Hall to start a week that consists of three matches in a five-day span. The Owls face America East Conference opponent, Binghamton with first serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+.

The Owls will continue through to AAC play on Friday, Oct. 11 at UAB with start time scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. On Sunday, Temple will make its way to Memphis to meet up with the Tigers at 2 p.m. ET.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
- The Owls split their two matches last weekend, putting their overall season record at 7-9, putting them in a tie for eighth place of the American Athletic Conference. Temple comes into Wednesday's match after earning their first American Athletic Conference win of the season on Sunday versus Florida Atlantic, 27-25, 25-23, 25-18 improving their AAC record to 1-3. On Friday, the Cherry and White fell in straight sets to the South Florida Bulls by the score 23-25, 26-28, 23-25.
- In Sunday's win versus FAU, Temple hit .319, just behind its August 31 mark against FDU when it hit .333.
- Versus the USF Bulls on Friday night, the Owls totaled 14 team blocks, the second most of 2024, behind Sept. 7 versus North Carolina when they recorded 17.
- Freshman outside hitter Sydney Jones led the Owls with 26 kills, averaging 4.33 kills per set in six total sets on her way to her first AAC Freshman of the Week honor on Monday. Jones also led Temple with a .400 hitting percentage and 15 digs. On Friday night versus South Florida, the Havertown, Pa. native led the Owls with 11 kills while hitting a team-best .348. Jones was one dig shy of her fourth double-double of the season as she tallied nine digs. Then on Sunday, Jones was more impressive the sweep of Florida Atlantic, helping the Owls to their first AAC win of the season. Jones led the match with 15 kills and a .438 hitting percentage to go along with two service aces.
- Middle blocker Chelci Banks earned her second AAC Defensive Player of the Week of the season on Monday as she led the team with 14 blocks in total (eight solo) and averaged 2.33 blocks per set in six total sets this past weekend versus South Florida and Florida Atlantic. Banks started off the weekend against South Florida with eight blocks, tying a career-high and then helped Temple to a sweep of Florida Atlantic adding six more. Mainly known for her defense, the senior also recorded 13 kills (2.17 kills/set) while hitting .650. Banks earned double-digit points 11.5 and 12.5 in the two matches against USF and FAU.
- Graduate student Taylor Davenport continues to lead the AAC this season in four offensive categories, including kills (237), kills per set (4.41), points (272), points per set (4.95).
- As a team, the Owls lead the AAC with 2.54 blocks per set. After her two-match total of 14 last weekend versus USF and FAU, Chelci Banks ranks sixth in the conference with 46.
- Jones averages .45 aces per set, putting her second in the AAC.
- As a team, Temple ranks second in the conference with 16.55 points per set.
- With four wins in its last five matches the Binghamton volleyball team enters Wednesday's match with a 12-6 overall record and in third place of the America East Conference with a 2-1 record. On Friday, UMBC snapped a three-match winning streak by the Bearcats in straight sets 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, as Tsvetelina Ilieva led BU with 18 kills and a pair of aces. Just two days later, Binghamton rebounded by knocking off Bryant in four sets, 33-31, 8-25, 27-25, 25-17. Llieva led all players in the match with 21 kills but teammates Ella Schabort, and Misa Dlouha pitched in with 10 apiece. Defensively in the match, Llieva and Stephanie Gatto combined for 10 blocks.
- Llieva ranks in the top 10 in four offensive categories including, kills (304 – 1st), kills/set (4.61 – 1st), aces (28 – t2nd), aces/set (.42 – 2nd), hitting percentage (.285 – 7th), points (352 – 1st), and points/set (5.33 – 1st)
- The Bearcats are getting it done defensively behind the play libero Emily Cronkhite's 234 digs which is third in the conference and Dlouha's 1.32 blocks/set which put her second in the AEC.
- Wednesday match will be the second-ever meeting between the two schools with the last occurring in 2015 with Temple picking the lone victory.
