The Temple men's basketball team plays the first of two Big 5 pod games as it hosts city rival Drexel on Tuesday, November 12. Tipoff from the Liacouras Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Big 5 Format
Like last season, each of the six teams in the Philadelphia Big 5 will play two pod games, leading up to the Big 5 Classic, presented by Toyota, at the Wells Fargo Center on December 7. Temple's pod games are Tuesday against Drexel at home and on November 30 at La Salle.

Last Time Out - Men's Basketball Runs Past Monmouth, at Jersey Jam
The Temple University men's basketball team used a red-hot offense to improve to 2-0 on the season in a 103-74 victory over Monmouth at the Deborah Heart & Lung Cancer Jersey Jam on Friday. Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored a game-high 25 points and was named Most Outstanding Player of the event.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks held an early 5-4 lead before Mashburn Jr.'s runner in the lane jumpstarted a 20-3 run over the next six minutes.
  • In addition to Mashburn Jr.'s exploits, freshman Dillon Battie had consecutive finishes inside to put Temple in front 24-8 at the 11:40 mark of the first half.
  • Monmouth continued to battle, chipping away at the lead and pulling to within 35-26 with less than six minutes to go in the period.
  • Mashburn Jr. stemmed the tide, converting on a four-point play to ignite an 11-0 spurt and give the Owls their largest lead of the game at 46-26.
  • Temple would go into the locker room with a 21-point cushion and continued to play well offensively over the final 20 minutes of action.
  • Jameel Brown drained a triple to put the score at 72-46 with 12 minutes to go, and another from downtown to make it 83-55 with 6:40 on the clock.
  • From there, the only thing that remained in doubt was if Temple would hit the 100-point mark, which happened when Christian Tomasco hit a free throw with 57.5 left.

Keeping It 100
Temple scored 100 points for the 22nd time in program history against Monmouth. It was the first time it has accomplished the feat at a neutral site and is the first time it happened in a regulation game since a 108-61 victory against Saint Joseph's on December 10, 2019.

Props
Two Owls were recognized by the AAC in the weekly awards. Dillon Battie was named the Freshman of the Week and Jamal Mashburn Jr. was selected to the honor roll. Battie averaged 10.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while going 7-for-9 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Mashburn tallied 25.5 per game and was 20-of-31 (64.5 percent) from the floor with eight three pointers.

Youth Movement
Through two games, freshmen Dillon Battie and Babatunde Durodola have made a strong impact for the Owls. In Temple's win against Monmouth, the duo combined for 29 points and 13 rebounds. The pair have also shown strong efficiency, each shooting an impressive 7-for-9 on the season. Joining the duo on Friday were Aiden Tobiason who scored five points against Monmouth and Holden Pierre-Louis who made his collegiate debut against the Hawks.

Sharing Is Caring
Temple's 17 assists against Monmouth already matched its season-high total from last year.

Long Distance Dedication
Taking a lot of threes is part of Adam Fisher's offense as evidenced by the 296 triples made last season, the second most in program history. If Monday night is any indication, the record could be challenged again as the Cherry and White have 21 triples in its first two games of the season, its most in a two-game stretch of regulation games since November 18 and 22, 2023 against Columbia and Ole Miss, respectively.

Scouting Report
Drexel enters Tuesday night with a 2-0 record, most recently downing the reigning four-time Patriot League champion Colgate Raiders, 73-56. DU's Kobe MaGee set a career-high with 28 points as the Dragons led for the entire game.

DU finished last season with a 20-12 record and was ranked eleventh in the CAA's preseason poll. The team recorded a strong 13-1 home record, with their only loss being to Temple, 66-64. On the glass, Drexel showed its strength, ranking 33rd in the nation with an average of 39.16 rebounds per game.

The Dragons enter the 2024-25 season with a reloaded roster, having lost each of their top five scorers. Overall, DU lost 73% of its offensive output from a season ago. The backcourt tandem of MaGee and Yame Butler leads Drexel's returning players, currently standing as the top two scorers for the Blue and Gold.

With significant roster changes, the team now features many new faces. Drexel has added three freshmen and four transfers with half the roster being composed of new players. Highlighting new additions for the Dragons is freshman center Ralph Akuta who is Drexel's first seven-footer in Zach Spiker's tenure which began in 2016-17.

Head coach Zach Spiker is in his ninth season leading the Dragons. He was named the 2023-24 Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year, with DU achieving a winning record in each of the last four seasons. This run included a CAA Championship run during the 2020-21 season with the Dragons making it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years.

All-Time Series Against Drexel
Temple holds a 33-10 series advantage against the Dragons and has won six in a row in the series.

Last Time Against The Dragons
Temple and Drexel battled down to the final buzzer before the Owls prevailed 66-64 on the road on November 14, 2023. The Dragons pulled the game to a single point with nine seconds left, but TU calmly sank two free throws to seal the win. Matteo Picarelli had 11 points and five rebounds in the game and Steve Settle III stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, five boards, three blocks, two assists and two steals.
