Volleyball on the Road in the Lone Star State to Play Three Weekend Matches

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball returns to action on Friday to take part in the Aggie Invitational in College Station Texas at Reed Arena. The Owls begin the weekend on Friday night against the host Aggies at 7:30 p.m. ET. on ESPN+. On Saturday, the Cherry and White take on the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at 3 p.m. ET. To wrap up the weekend, TU will look to take down a northeast region opponent in the New Hampshire Wildcats at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday.
 
SCOUTING TEMPLE
Temple enters this weekend's matches with a 3-4 overall record following losses against South Carolina, North Carolina, and Presbyterian last weekend in South Carolina.

In those three losses, Lexi Yoza had a career weekend as the Owls' setter. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native not only played a vital role in leading the young offense, but she played strong on the defensive side. The sophomore setter totaled 105 assists, 35 digs, and four service aces. Yoza started the weekend leading Temple with 15 assists versus South Carolina, and then Saturday and Sunday, the young floor general stepped up her game. Against UNC on Saturday, Yoza was one dig short of a double-double where she had match-high 37 assists and nine digs. Then on Sunday versus Presbyterian, the sophomore had the match of her career. Yoza had a career-highs of 53 assists and 20 digs. In all, Yoza averaged 10.60 assists per set and 4.0 digs per set in the match versus PC.
 
Taylor Davenport had an excellent individual statistical weekend with 62 kills over the span of three matches, averaging 5.17 kills per set, and hitting .280. The Columbia, S.C. native returned to her hometown on Friday night, leading Temple with 16 kills and eight digs against South Carolina. On Saturday, the graduate student outside hitter added another team-high of 13 kills against North Carolina, but her biggest match of the weekend occurred on Sunday in a five-set match against the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Davenport recorded her second career double-double with a career-high 33 kills with a career-best .355 hitting percentage and tied her career-high with 10 digs.  She became the first Owls' player since 2012 (Gabriella Mautiua) to record 30 kills in a match and it's the tied for the fifth most all-time in program history. In the match, the outside hitter averaged a team-high 6.80 points per set and 6.60 kills per set.
 
Freshman Sydney Jones is becoming a reliable option for the Owls offense at the outside hitter position. In three matches last weekend in South Carolina, Jones averaged just under three kills per set (2.92), 2.00 digs per set with the second most digs on the team with 24, meanwhile tallying a team-high six service aces. The Havertown, Pa. native recorded a pair of double-doubles on Saturday and Sunday. Versus North Carolina, Jones put together 11 kills, 11 digs effort where she averaged 2.75 kills per set and 2.75 digs per set, but Sunday was the Owls' freshman had her coming out party against Presbyterian where she racked up career-highs of 22 kills, 13 digs, and five service aces. In the match, the outside hitter averaged was second on the team, averaging 5.50 points per set and 4.75 kills per set. She was the Owls' go to player in fifth and final set with a team-high five kills.
 
SCOUTING TEXAS A&M
Texas A&M has begun the year at 4-0 with setter Maddie Waak leading the top SEC offense, averaging 12.31 assists per set. The Aggies are the conference leaders in points (19.92/set), hitting percentage (.333), assists (15.08/set), and kills (16.15/set). Individually, Ifenna Cos-Okpalla is second in the conference at .444. Logan Lednicky is fourth with a .436 hitting percentage and fifth with 4.21 kills per set, and Morgan Perkins is fifth as she is hitting .423. On the defensive side, Cos-Okpalla is second in the conference with 1.39 blocks per set.
 
ALL-TIME VS. TEXAS A&M
Texas A&M holds a 2-0 advantage with both matches occurring in 1998 and 2018.
 
SCOUTING LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns are 2-3 on the young season. Last weekend, The Cajuns split of five-set matches versus Houston and Northwestern State. Megan Hawkins is third with 21 services aces in the Sun Belt Conference and first with with .67 aces per set. The Ragin' Cagun setter is fourth with 128 assists and sixth  with 6.10 assist per set. Defensively, Cami Hicks is second in the SBC with 28 blocks, but is first with 1.33 blocks per set. Mio Yamamoto has the third most digs of any conference player with 102 and 4.86 digs per set.
 
ALL-TIME VS. LOUISIANA
The Owls won the only meeting between the two schools which occurred in 1999.
 
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Wildcats are 3-3 in 2024 and last weekend at the Harvard Invitational they earned victories versus Merrimack and Stonehill in straight sets but dropped their final match against Harvard in five sets. Hannah Serbousek and Avery LePore were named to the Harvard Invitational All-Tournament Team on Saturday. Serbousek recorded a combined 35 kills for 38 points and 29 digs over the three matches.  LePore tallied a total of 48 digs. She ranks second in average digs per set in the America East (4.0).
 
ALL-TIME VS. NEW HAMPSHIRE
Temple leads the all-time series 3-1. The first meeting took place in 2002 and the last happened in 2018.

UP NEXT
Temple will be back in the Philadelphia next weekend when it travels up the road to Villlanova for the Wildcat Invitational on Friday and Saturday. To wrap up the weekend TU will be in McGonigle Hall taking on the Marist Red Foxes.
