Owls Comeback Comes Up Short in 3-2 Setback against Penn

10.19.25 | Field Hockey

Rieger becomes first Owl since 2015 to record at least 23 points in a single season.

PHILADELPHIA – Despite a fourth-quarter goal from Mara Lenting, the Temple University field hockey team could not complete a comeback, falling 3-2 to Penn in nonconference action Sunday afternoon at Howarth Field.

The Owls (10-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) now turn their attention to nationally ranked Liberty next Friday at Howarth Field. The Quakers (7-5, 3-2 Ivy) extended their winning streak to three and will host Yale next Friday in University City.

Temple opened the scoring in the first quarter when Peyton Rieger registered her eighth goal of the season. After three consecutive Quaker goals in the second and third periods, Lenting found the back of the cage to make it a one-goal game with less than five minutes remaining.

Rieger totaled a goal and an assist for three points on the day. The Woolwich, N.J., native now has eight goals and seven assists for 23 points — the most by an Owl in a season since Alyssa Delp's 37-point campaign in 2015.

How It Happened

With 2:50 remaining in the first quarter, Kathryn Gauvin fired a shot that was initially saved, but Rieger buried the bouncing rebound to give Temple the early lead.

Penn's Honor Roberts and Philine Klas scored in the second quarter, while Beau Libby Barrington-Hibbert added an insurance goal in the third as the Quakers entered the fourth frame up 3-1.

The Owls looked to rally late on a penalty corner. Lenting inserted to Lucia Magro, who found Rieger in space. Rieger's shot was tipped in by Lenting to cut the deficit to one with 4:42 remaining.

Temple generated a few chances down the stretch, including a penalty corner, but could not find the equalizer.

By the Numbers

Penn held an 8-6 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Temple earned a slim 5-4 lead in penalty corners.

Goalkeepers Alex Lepore (10-4) and Isabella Ospitale combined for four saves, while Penn's Ruby de Frees made three in the win.

Up Next

Temple will host No. 7 Liberty on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. at Howarth Field before celebrating Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 26, at noon against Yale.
