Bio
Cathy Bongiovi, who has nearly 20 years of sports media relations experience, is in her second year as the associate director of sports media relations at Temple University. Bongiovi coordinates media coverage for the Owls Bowl Subdivision football team. Head Football Coach Al Golden and his staff are quite familiar with Bongiovi, as she worked with both Golden and Defensive Coordinator Mark D[apos]Onofrio at the University of Virginia.
Bongiovi spent the last six years at Virginia, handling publicity efforts for the Cavalier football, women[apos]s basketball, and rowing teams. During her time at UVa, Bongiovi worked with numerous National Football League (NFL) Draft picks, including quarterback Matt Schaub (Houston Texans), tight end Heath Miller (Pittsburgh Steelers), and offensive tackle D[apos]Brickashaw Ferguson (New York Jets). Her marketing and promotional materials have helped propel collegiate athletics teams into the national limelight, as well as highlighting several athletes for prestigious national All-America honors and Heisman Trophy campaigns.
Prior to her stint at Virginia, Bongiovi spent four years at Penn State. In March 2000, she advanced with the Lady Lions to the NCAA Women[apos]s Final Four, making the prestigious trip for the third time in her career. She also handled publicity for the PSU women[apos]s soccer team which advanced to the 1999 College Cup.
A 1987 Penn State graduate in broadcast journalism, Bongiovi joined her alma mater in 1997 after serving two years as the assistant director of communications at the Atlantic 10 Conference in Philadelphia.
Following graduation, Bongiovi spent three seasons as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers public relations staff. She then served as an athletic communications assistant at the University of Connecticut, where she handled all publicity for the women[apos]s basketball team during its inaugural Final Four appearance in 1991.
In August 1991, Bongiovi was named the assistant sports information director at the University of Iowa, and two years later she was promoted to sports information director for the Hawkeyes[apos] 12 varsity women[apos]s sports, including Final Four women[apos]s basketball and World Series softball.
A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Female Athletic Media Relations Executives (FAME), and U.S. Basketball Writers[apos] Association, Bongiovi has earned numerous citations from CoSIDA for excellence in publication design, including one for the 2006 Virginia football media guide. She is the chair of the CoSIDA Publications Committee. She has also served a member of the NCAA Women[apos]s Final Four media coordination staff.
