Owls will face Albany on newly renovated field at 1:00 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Field Hockey team will play its first true home game of the season on Sunday when they face Albany at 1:00 p.m. After playing their first three home games of the season at Buckley Field on the campus of Drexel University, the Owls are set to play their first game of the 2009 season at the newly renovated Geasey Field.

The Owls went 2-1 at their “home away from home,” suffering their lone loss to Rider, while picking up wins against St. Francis and Rutgers.

A year ago the Owls finished with a 6-2 record at Geasey Field, which helped propel them to a third place finish in the A-10 regular season and an appearance in the semifinals of the conference playoffs.

Head Coach Amanda Janney realizes the importance of playing within the confines of one's home field. “Often we play better on our home field,” said the fifth-year head coach. “I know this new surface will make an impact on our school pride when we play at home.”

Janney is not the only one anticipating the return to North Broad Street. The players have also had their sights set on this game since the day that construction began. “Our team is more than ready to get back home onto Geasey Field,” Janney said. “The players have been walking by the field and have been giving us construction updates for the last 5 months. They share the same anticipation for the opening of the field as the coaches do.”

Along with the new field comes a new set of expectations for the team. “Our athletic administration has been very supportive of our Field Hockey program and we are grateful that they understood our needs and provided us with the best surface possible,” Janney remarked. “Getting this new surface allows us to be able to practice and compete on the same surface that our top competitors are playing on. This puts our program in a position to better compete with top 20 teams as well as continue to attract and recruit the top high school players.”

Janney spoke for the entire program when she said, “We are looking forward to having a great home opener this Sunday!”
