PHILADELPHIA – Bridget Settles scored two goals including the game-winner as the Temple field hockey team rallied to defeat cross-town rival Penn by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Quakers (1-9) struck first but the Owls (6-8) dominated the rest of the way.
Penn's Annie Matthews got the Quakers on the board in the ninth minute of play when she took the ball all the way in from the top of the circle and scored on her team's first shot of the game.
Temple soon began to establish itself on the offensive end where the Owls would spend most of the game, and by halftime they had built a 3-1 lead.
“I'm proud of the way the team responded after getting down 1-0,” said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. “That's something we've struggled with in the past. We showed the kind of championship effort we're capable of giving when it's needed. In the future we just can't sit back and wait for things to happen- we need to make them happen.”
Katie Briglia scored off a penalty corner in the 23rd minute with assists from Taryn Nichols and Kaylee Keener, tying the game at 1-1.
Five minutes later, Settles deflected in a pass from Briglia after a corner, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner. Just before the halftime buzzer, Caryn Lambright took a pass from Settles and put it in the back of the net to give the Owls a 3-1 advantage.
Temple was awarded a penalty shot 10 minutes into the second half, which Settles took and scored on for the final tally of the game.
The Owls finished with a decisive 25-5 advantage in total shots as well as a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. Sarah Dalrymple made saves on three of Penn's five total shots.
Temple will play only Atlantic 10 contests for the remainder of the season, starting with a 3:00 p.m. game at La Salle on Friday, Oct. 15.
