Owls look for two Atlantic 10 wins at home this weekend

PHILADELPHIA - After starting the Atlantic 10 schedule with a win at Saint Joseph's last week, the Temple field hockey team is home this weekend and looking for two more conference wins against Richmond and city rival La Salle. The Owls (4-10, 1-0) will face Richmond (8-5, 1-0), a team receiving votes in the national poll, on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:00 p.m. Sunday's 1:00 p.m. game against La Salle (5-7, 0-0) has been dedicated "Alumni Day," as the team will honor and thank all alums of the program.

SETTLES RANKED NATIONALLY IN SCORING
With 13 goals so far this season, senior Bridget Settles is currently ranked first in the Atlantic 10 and is tied for 18th in NCAA Division I with 0.93 goals per game. Settles also ranks 15th among active players in NCAA Division I in career goals with 38.

OWLS WIN ATLANTIC 10 OPENER AT SAINT JOSEPH'S
Senior Bridget Settles scored twice and Temple cruised to a 4-1 win in its Atlantic 10 opener at Saint Joseph's on Oct. 7. Junior Katie Briglia's first goal of the season would prove to be the game-winner, as she put the Owls ahead for good on a blast from the top of the circle in the seventh minute of the game. Kaylee Keener assisted on the score. Temple added a second goal in the 29th minute as Settles scored on a long shot after a penalty corner, and the Owls extended their lead eight minutes into the second half when freshman Amber Youtz scored her third goal of the season on a rebounded shot. Settles kept the Owls' run going six minutes later with her second goal of the game.

SCOUTING RICHMOND and LA SALLE
Richmond comes to Temple on a three-game winning streak and with an overall record of 8-5. The Spiders, like the Owls, won their Atlantic 10 opener with a 6-1 decision at home against Saint Louis. One of Richmond's wins earlier this season came against No. 13 Princeton, 3-2. Chelsea Davies and Katelin Peterson are tied for the team lead in points, with Davies recording eight goals and four assists for 20 points and Peterson tallying seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski has made 66 saves this season while allowing just 15 goals (1.69 per game).

La Salle has one two straight games heading into its Friday contest against Lock Haven, which will be the A-10 opener for the Explorers. The team is 5-7 overall, with three losses coming in overtime. Maddy Tettelbach leads the team with five goals while three other players have scored four times this season. Lisa Shaffer has started every game in goal, making an impressive 102 saves (8.27 per game to lead the A-10) while allowing only 23 goals.

FIELD HOCKEY ALUM TONI BYARD-JENKINS INDUCTED INTO TEMPLE HALL OF FAME
Temple field hockey alum Toni Byard-Jenkins is among the five former student-athletes and two national championship teams earning induction into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011. Byard-Jenkins is a two-time All-American, earning honors in field hockey in 1991 and 1992.  Named a finalist for the prestigious Honda Broderick Award and the NCAA Woman of the Year, she was named the 1989 Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year and an All-Tournament Team honoree.

On the career charts, Byard is fifth in scoring (102 points) and fifth in goals scored (46).  As a junior in 1991, she scored a career-high five goals against Hofstra.  Temple advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times during her tenure. Byard also earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors in 1993 as an infielder with the Temple softball team.
