PHILADELPHIA - Bridget Settles converted on her third of three penalty strokes this season to help the Temple field hockey team stay unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 with a 2-1 overtime win against La Salle. The Owls (6-10, 3-0) dominated the game offensively but had to battle the frustration of a strong La Salle defense to get the victory on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field.
The Explorers (6-8, 1-1) got nine saves from redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer as Temple out-shot La Salle, 22-3. The Owls also had six penalty corner opportunites to La Salle's two, but it was on the first of those for La Salle that got them on the board.
Lindsay Fry took La Salle's first shot of the game on a pass from Becca Chylack after a penalty corner, and snuck it past Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen for the 1-0 lead. Millen went on to record saves on the Explorers' only two other shots in the game.
Temple trailed despite taking shot after shot, and not until the 51st minute did the Owls get rewarded for their efforts. Amber Youtz fed a ball in from the top of the circle and Lauren Hunt was able to deflect the long ball into the back of the net to tie the game.
The tie stood for the final 19 minutes of regulation despite more opportunities for Temple, but it was just two minutes and 39 seconds into overtime that the Owls were awarded the penalty stroke.
Temple will take its undefeated A-10 record on the road to Saint Louis next weekend, for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 21. The Owls return home for Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23.
