Owls return home for Sunday showdown against Massachusetts and "Senior Day"

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Bridget Settles scored a goal in the 21st minute and it held up as the Temple field hockey team remained undefeated in Atlantic 10 play with a 1-0 win at Saint Louis. The Owls (7-10, 4-0) will return home for "Senior Day" against Massachusetts at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23. The Minutewomen may also be undefeated heading into that contest, pending the outcome of their Friday afternoon game at La Salle.
No doubt frustrating for Temple was its lack of scoring for the second straight game despite almost total domination on offense. Last weekend the Owls got a 2-1 overtime win vs. La Salle despite out-shooting the Explorers 22-3, and today's effort at Saint Louis (3-13, 0-2) produced similar results as Temple recorded 17 shots to the Billikens' two.
Megan Ambrose was impressive in goal for Saint Louis with nine saves.
"We're very excited to be 4-0 and to know now that we're in the A-10 Tournament," said head coach Amanda Janney. "In past years it has come down to the end and we've been dependent on other teams' results, so to know now is an awesome feeling."
It was on the Owls' sixth shot of the game that Settles scored, driving the ball in from the left side to the far post and past Ambrose for the 1-0 lead. Temple had 10 penalty corner opportunities in the game compared to just one for Saint Louis, but was unable to get an insurance goal the rest of the way.
"Bridget had a great spin move to create her own shot, and it was big that a senior stepped up when we needed it," said Janney. "(Saint Louis') defense played hard. I'm just happy our team is creating so many opportunities, we just need to keep improving on finishing them. Our defense was great as well and they really handled the pressure. We're thrilled to get a shutout which we hadn't done since the first game of the season."
Fortunately for the Owls, one shot for Saint Louis went high in the first period, and the other hit the post in the second period.
For Settles, it was her team and conference-leading 15th goal of the season and the 40th of her career.
With a win on Sunday against Massachusetts, Temple would clinch the A-10 regular season and the top seed in the A-10 Tournament, which will be held at nearby Saint Joseph's on Nov. 4-5.
