Owls wrap up regular season at A-10 foe Lock Haven on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - In its home finale, Temple field hockey will "Play 4 The Cure" on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3:00 p.m. against Liberty in a non-conference match-up. The Owls will then wrap up the regular season and Atlantic 10 schedule when they travel to Lock Haven for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday. Massachusetts has already clinched the top seed in next weekend's A-10 Tournament, but the Owls have earned a berth and can clinch the second seed with a win at Lock Haven.

The Play 4 the Cure movement was created by Mystx Field Hockey Club founder, director, and head coach Tina Reinprecht. Tina's longtime desire was to create an indoor field hockey benefit tournament for breast cancer research. A tournament home was found for the event at the SportsPlex in Feastervile, PA in 2006. The benefit was dedicated to mothers of players in the Mystx FH Club who fought the fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research and awareness is the beneficiary of our event and in two short years they have contributed over $11,000.00 towards the Philadelphia Affiliate of the SGK for the Cure.

The Owls (7-11, 4-1) are receiving three votes in this week's NFHCA Division I poll after winning three of their last four games. Temple suffered a narrow, heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to UMass last Sunday after both team's entered the game with undefeated conference records. The Owls will be looking for a rematch in the A-10 Tournament, set for Nov. 4-5 at Saint Joseph's. Senior Bridget Settles leads the team and A-10, and ranks 20th in NCAA Division I in goals per game at 0.89 (16 total).

Liberty comes in with a 5-9 record overall, but the Flames have lost three straight. This will be the first-ever meeting between Temple and Liberty. Helen Doolittle leads the team with six goals, while three other players are tied with three goals apiece. The Flames are a first-year program, coached by Jodi Murphy who formerly coached at Richmond as well as played there.

Lock Haven is 8-10 overall but just 1-3 in the A-10. The Eagles got their first conference win last weekend when they edged Saint Louis on the road, 3-2 in overtime. Leslie Ahern leads the team with 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points, while Kristi Shepps is right there with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. Temple holds a 3-2 lead in the all-time series between the teams, and earned a 3-2 home win a year ago.
