PHILADELPHIA - The Wake Forest Demon Deacons used a big first half to take control of the game as Temple field hockey dropped a 4-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Owls (4-10) held Wake Forest scoreless in the second half, but could only get one goal of their own against the Demon Deacons (3-8).
The game got off to a tough start for Temple when Wake Forest was awarded a penalty stroke just 2:27 into the contest. Jess McFadyen converted on the stroke for a 1-0 lead, and it was more than 20 minutes until the Demon Deacons struck again.
Kari Walkley scored twice in a row for Wake Forest within a two-minute span, with assists from Kaitlin Piosa and Lizzie Rae, respectively. Taylor Rhea added the final goal for the Demon Deacons late in the first half on an assist from Anna Kozniuk after a rebounded shot and save.
The Owls, who finished the game with a 5-4 edge in penalty corner opportunities, were able to convert on one of those midway through the second half. Bridget Settles scored on a corner for her 13th goal of the season, and assists came from Kaylee Keener and Emily Fuertsch.
Despite the edge in corners, Temple could not create enough opportunities on offense to mount any further comeback in the second half. Lizzy Millen made five saves for the Owls, while Haley Mitchell recorded two saves after entering the game with 26:20 remaining.
Temple will be back to Atlantic 10 play next week and looking to build on its 1-0 record as the Owls host Richmond on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:00 p.m.
