PHILADELPHIA - Senior Bridget Settles scored a hat trick in Temple field hockey's opening game of 2011, leading the Owls (1-0) to a 4-0 shutout win against visiting Bucknell (0-1). The rest of the schedule for the Conference Cup Tournament has been altered due to Hurricane Irene.
Bucknell will play Boston University on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., and Temple will face #1 Maryland at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29.
Settles scored unassisted for the first goal of the game just 7:07 into action, carrying the ball in from the right side for what would be the game-winner. Fellow senior Carissa Young scored on a corner with 10:26 elapsed to put the Owls up 2-0, and Settles added Temple's third goal of the half on a long assist from senior Becca Keener.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made two saves to preserve the shutout for Temple as the Owls out-shot the Bison 15-4 for the game. Settles added her final goal to complete the hat trick just four minutes into the second half, redirecting a shot off the post during a scramble in front of the goal.
