Owls fall 6-0 to the powerhouse Terrapins out of the ACC

PHILADELPHIA - Jill Witmer and Katie Gerzabek scored two goals apiece to lead defending national champ and No. 1 Maryland to a 6-0 win over the Temple field hockey team on Monday afternoon in the final game of Temple's Conference Cup Tournament. Maryland improves to 2-0 overall while Temple is 1-1 after its opening weekend of play.
The Terps' Jemma Buckley scored her fourth goal of the weekend while also adding two assists in the game, and Shelby Sydnor also scored for Maryland.
Gerzabek scored on a corner four minutes into the game to put Maryland on the board, and Witmer scored back-to-back goals followed by Buckley's goal to give the Terps a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Temple's defense held Maryland off for more than 15 minutes to start the second half, but the Terps then scored twice in a five-minute span for their fifth and sixth goals.
The Owls' Lizzy Millen made six saves in goal for Temple. Freshman Amber Youtz and senior Bridget Settles both had opportunities, but Maryland keeper Natalie Hunter made a save on Youtz's attempt while Settles' try was just wide. The Owls also had an opportunity on a penalty corner in the second half but could not convert.
Temple will host a second home tournament this coming weekend, the Temple Tournament featuring Michigan, Ohio, Towson and Saint Joseph's. First up for the Owls is a game against Michigan at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3.
